Guest guest Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 I am so sorry. I understand. Karac is 14. I am his grandmother. I had an ABA program for him and he was making great progress until he had a tetanus shot when he was 10; he has regressed since. I didn't know at the time that thimersol was in the tetanus shot or I would have never let him have it. I don't know what can be done. I pick up Karac every day from school and I have a 22 year old young man to help me every day. We try to keep him interacting. He rides bikes with him; they go down to a neighbor boys to shoot basketballs; he rides a scooter to the park. I take him to gymnastics on Tuesdays and a free horse therapy place on Wednesdays. I do some printing, keyboarding, reading, and coloring with him to just force him to stay engaged. It is not easy and inspite of everything he seems to be losing what language he had. The good thing is that he isn't aggressive and he seems to be reasonably happy. Do you have any help? Pat K Quote

Guest guest Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 Just wondering if you have taken him to a ped.neurologist..I'd be concerned that with each " movement " he makes he needs prompting .Possibly some neurological issue going on..movement disorder..I don't know but the constant need for " prompting " is a major concern especial since it didn't exist before.I've heard of prompting for certain things but not every single body movement.Has he ever had a CT scan or MRI? He was near normal at age 10, except for his inability io speak. He has become so very severely prompt dependent in the last couple of years, that I would call it his main disability at this time. He has lost 40 pounds in the last 2 years because he waits for prompting for every single movement he must make, from stabbing his food, lifting the fork to mouth, placing fork in mouth, removing fork, chewing food, continue chewing food, swallow, etc. He does the same thing with getting dressed...step by step. He no longer has any interests, or personality. He is STUCK on this prompt dependent-ness and OCD. I am becoming severley depressed and also bitter. I used to enjoy spending time with my son, now it seems more like pure hell. HELP! Quote

Guest guest Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 I would take him to a pediatric neurologist as quickly as possible. It sounds like you may have a medical issue going on. Guest guest Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 I can sure relate. My son is now 19 and severley self-abusive. It's to the point now that I am considering residential placement for him. I have always said he was going to live at home but it's to the point I am about to fall apart myself. I have a 15 year old son and a 14 year old daughter (bipolar II, unmedicated and 35 weeks pregnant) living at home with me. I was up most of the night trying to keep Andy quiet and calmed so he wouldn't hit. He has given himself boxer's ears and has blackened both of his eyes because of the temporal hitting he does. He even wears a protective helmet and it's not protecting enough. reverseautism <reverseautism@...> wrote: My son is 15, diagnosed at age 22 months. has not spoken since hegot a tetanus shot at age 3. Guest guest Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 Stacey, Thank you for your reply. has had 2 MRIs, at age 22 months and at age 5 Tney both appeared relatively normal. The need for prompts seems to be behaviour in nature, because sometimes he "forgets" to wait and then he will retrace his steps, go back and wait for the prompt, as in getting into the van without a prompt, and then getting a look on his face like, "Ooops, I forgot to wait." and then will get out and wait with one foot in the van, with an expectant look on his face , sometimes even a smile. Guest guest Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 I learned the hard way about the Tetanus...my son stopped talking at age 3 immediately after a tetanus shot. Quote
Guest guest Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 One more thought. If it were me, I would step back and think about taking care of myself first, so I could better handle my son's issues. Contact your clergyman/ rabbi, or someone who could be of some emotional support to you. As parents of extremely difficult children, it's a necessity not a luxury to seek out help for our kids AND ourselves. Sara Losing my son..AGAIN!! Guest guest Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I cannot relate to your feelings but I know what you mean. I do know now going on my son's 9th birthday I can tell you it is pure hell without him. He drown in a retention pond in May of last year. I cannot imagine ever thinking time with him would be so horrible compared to without. I am sorry you are near this point. Todd Re: Losing my son..AGAIN!! I can sure relate. Guest guest Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 Hi Lindy, Is it ok for kids to take St. s Wort? I was thinking of giving it to my son aged 13 - as the docs wil not prescribe SSRis. Guest guest Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 Where do you get it and what form does it come in? Can it be crushed? I'm taking my son to texas sunday and he's not flown in years and not for 3hrs,so I'm wondering if something non-prescription would be good for him.
