Wow what a list! We can definately share info like I'm sure some others can on

this list with us! And yeah,my son also takes Clonidine to go to bed. It's helped

before with his anxiety. As for the Buspar,I would say it didn't take long(a day

or two) to see effects. It says to give it a few weeks for full effect.I noticed

no side effects from it either so that was a good difference from everything

else.

And yes, outside of the groups like this one ..I'm seeking out local parent

support groups..Its time.

,  has been on Clonidine, Risperdal, Seroquil, Zyprexa, Ativan,

Naltrexone, Prozac,Valium, Depakene, Trileptal, Abilify and many others I don't

remember. Risperdal can aggravate seizures in those with a history of it, so it

is a good thing your son is not on that still. The Zoloft which is an

antidepressant seems to help the most for him. Prozac helped him too but gave

him terrible diarrhea. Yes, a lot of these drugs as similar to your son's

case, caused constipation which made 's behaviors worsen. Nobody dose

understand unless you go thru it day to day. I hope you have the time and energy

to find some local support groups in your area to meet folks with the same

issues. Please feel free to e mail me with advice or needed support. Also, I was

thinking of getting Matt started on Buspar. Any advice on this medicine in

relation to how it helps or does not help your son. And also there is no reason

why Valium can not be prescribed for your son. It is in the same category as

Klonopin being an anti-anxiety medicine.  Regards, Barry

I agree ,

I can see that in my son. When he's agitated he has such an intense " need " to

pull over something heavy(my nightstand,his dresser,tv's)After he's done being

destructive ..he's fine..like he feels better. There's no way to disrupt or

redirect him to another form of " releasing " his frustration/anger unfortunately

at this time, but I hope in due time that it will. The reference to the chemicalls

being released in the brain, that's exactly what I was trying to communicate to

his psychologist, there's something about it that gives him relief(endorphines or

somthing?)

Most agitated behavior (self abuse, hitting, kicking, throwing

things, head banging, etc.) provides very strong proprioceptive

stimulation (resistance to joints and muscles). This tends to

release stress chemicals from the nervous system, helping it rebound

and organize. For many children, once the stress chemicals

accumulate to the point of melt down, they seek out behavior that

will help release the stress chemicals. It is very important that

children on the spectrum are given frequent up and moving, push/pull,

lift/carry, any gross motor activity, throughout the day.

This helps to release stress chemicals before they accumulated to

boiling point.

It is also very important to observe what communicative function the

behavior serves. What is the child trying to communicate. Once you

understand that, than we need to provide an alternative way to

communicate. However, that is easier said than done.

Good Luck,

Bill

Janet, Karac has been on .25 Zanax for over a year and it has been a wonderful mood stabilizer. It is trial and error. I think we have tried everything. The worst for us was Geodon and Risperdal. Oh, yes, and Ritalin! Pat K

Re: Hello, I am new member of group

My 12 year old has had sudden dramatic increase in SIB - hand-biting,

hitting his head, leg and chest. In the past most of his SIB was related to

stomachahces and constipation. Now, it appears to be related to frustration,

not pain. He is off school for a few weeks and is not tolerant of any

demands. His hands are a mess and I've decided I need to get this under

control. As well, last night I gave him melatonin for the first time and he

got a headache. Has anyone had this problem? I could actually see his

temples were red and his ears were red. He often gets hot ears when he has

pain. Also, I am curious as to success with medications. I tried respiridol

and it just made him fat. I still have him on it at night but it does

nothing to reduce aggression and SIB. Janet Re: Hello, I am

Hi and thank you for the kind welcome.   We live in South Florida.

Our son sounds quite a lot like your son with self injury

behaviors, reflux and vomiting and being destructive to property in our

home. is now on Zoloft and Klonopin for behaviors and Zantac for

his stomach problems. He also is prescribed Atarax syrup which is an

antihistamine that helps calm him down during his rampages and tantrums

which he seems to have on a daily basis.   Regards, Barry

Pat,

If you don't mind me asking, what behavior/mood issues did Karac have? Does Zanax

help with aggression? We too have tried Risperdal(weight gain)never did ritalin

but did adderal.

Stacey,

I developed a four page document that explains the meltdown process

(build up of stress chemicals), as well as identifies the different

areas of stressors (sensory, cognitive, social, emotional,

communicative, etc.)that these child experience every day. It is four

diagrams that summarize the information that I provide in a

presentation about stress and autism. Although it is not meant to be

a stand alone document, many parents have found it useful to give

teachers and relatives a document that provides awareness of how the

child experiences the world. Unfortunately I don't know how to

attach a document to this post. However, if you are interested in

the document, email me and I will attach the document to the email

and send it back.

I agree with you. After my son's outbursts, he usually cries.

The Zanax almost completely stopped the aggression, and doesn't seem to have any side affects. It seems to make him happy and compliant; also with Clonidine he sleeps all night. He has been on .25 at night for over a year. The ped. psy. prescribed it for 3 times a day, but so far we haven't had to increase it to that. I think the less meds the better. I remember that someone else on the list had good luck with it for a while and then it stopped working for them; so I'm aware that it may not be a permanent answer. Pat K

Wow ,that Zanax is really something! that's great there were no side effects

either for him,thats always always a concern.And yeah,I agree..less is better

especially if they're doing well on it.It's something how meds will work for our

kids for a period of time and then it's like they build up a resistance to it

and it stops working for them.

Yes, I know that Zanax is addictive. Most of the antianxiety meds are, but we have been very careful to start Karac on the lowest dosage, and he has been on it just at night for over a year and so far we haven't had a problem with it. It is certainly important to be aware of all the side effects of any of the drugs that are prescribed for these kids. If Karac builds up a tolerance for it, I'm sure we will have to find something else. Pat K
