Guest guest Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Thanks, Elaine, I think I'll try it with Karac this Saturday. Pat K Quote
Guest guest Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 I give him 3.5 mg that is the standard dosage it comes in and the reccomended dosage for kids 8 through adulthood. As far as the brand i've used a couple and haven't found much difference but the one we have gone with more consitstenly is the one at wal-mart. It is eighter nature or sun something. The only thing that I have found about the melatonin is that some of them have CoQ10. I have NOT given him any with this in it. However, I have seen research where it is supposed to be helpful to children with AUTISM. I want to check with our doc first though. Guest guest Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 We learned about Melatonin quickly but it would put Evan to sleep for about 4 hours and then up he came for the rest of the night. After we tried one brand with magnesium we started getting sleep once more. They quit working after awhile but that was probably other things coming into focus. We have have added the melatonin back into his night meds and supplements but he also takes Trazodone to help him sleep. Betty Quote
Guest guest Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 You have to skip a dose or two of melatonin to keep it being effective. Guest guest Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 Betty, how long has Evan been taking the Trazodone? It is an antidepressant an acts on the Serotonin very much like Prozac. How does it effect Evan other than helping him sleep? Pat K Quote
Guest guest Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 That's interesting Elaine; thanks for the tip. Pat K Quote
Guest guest Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 It is an older med and is not suppose to have the same problems as some of the newer ones. It is rarely used as an antidepressant because its major side effect was sleepiness. Other than that it does not seen to affect him much. His Trileptal is also suppose to have sleepiness as a side effect and I told the telemedicine doctor that as we increased the Trileptal I wanted to start cutting the Trazodone back and she has no problem with that. She is not even the one who suggested the Trazodone. Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: pkuenstler@... Betty, how long has Evan been taking the Trazodone? Pat K Pat, I think other people responded but I wanted to tell you my son has been taking Melatonin for a year now and it still works really well. He finally is a better sleeper and so am I. He takes 2.5 mg 45 minutes before bed every night. I buy Source Naturals brand which makes an orange flavored sublingual tablet that's chewable and is GF/CF. They also make it in 1, 2, and 3 mg. My son weighs 60 lbs. I buy it from www.myvitanet.com which gives you a $1.00 discount when you remember to type in the discount code V007 at check out. I buy it in the 120 count bottle and that cost $7.54 before tax and shipping, which is a lot less than Whole Foods sells it for (around $14 to $15). Quote

My son use to take the time released Melatonin from Source Naturals but it was not flavored so it was harder for him to take because he would chew it and it was a little chalky even though this formulation was supposed to be sublingual. We went back to the orange flavored. In the last year my son experienced a time when it seemed the Melatonin wasn't working as well so he went off it completely for about a week or two and when he started up again it worked fine. Quote
Guest guest Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 Well, Betty, I decided to try Melatonin on Karac tonight. I gave it to him at about 10 minutes til 9:00 and he was sound asleep by 10 minutes until 10:00. I'll be interested in seeing if he sleeps all night. I have read that Melatonin is suggested for TD too; so that would be a plus. Pat K Quote
Guest guest Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 We have used Melatonin on and off for some time now. Since our sons last med change we have revisited it:-( Discovered that the GNC liquid melatonin is no longer being mfg. Since he does not take his meds. w/o it in his foods, we were set back by the liquid not being mfg. any longer. The GNC was as all natural that we could find. It is a hit and miss sometimes. The melatonin in produced naturally in your system, but will make to drowsy, but not keep you asleep. I even took it just to see the effects. There did not seem to be any adverse effects. Once our daughter took it and had nightmares, but we all have those occasionally. Guest guest Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 I was also dismayed that GNC stopped making their liquid Melatonin, but I have found 2 other products that work just as well. I have been able to put both of these in my son's juice, and he drinks it right up just like he did with the GNC melatonin. 1. " The Melatonin Solution " , by Nutraceutical Solutions. I buy this at my local health food store, but here is an online source for it http://www.lifesvigor.com/prod/10824/ 2. " Melatonin Liquid Orange, Vegetarian " , by Source Naturals. I ordered it online from this site http://www.betterlife.com/prod_home_page.asp?prod_id=6679 .. <kman1991@e...> wrote: > Discovered that the GNC liquid melatonin is no longer being mfg. Guest guest Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 One of the first things I read when I first researched melatonin, years back, was that if it quit working to not up the dose but stop it for awhile and then start up again. I guess when it quits working that means we have enough of that hormone in our bodies for the time being. Right now what is working for ME is Benadryl. Which is not great during the day when I have things to do but it sure helps me go to sleep at night. If I do not take something my mind keeps going over a 100 or so things that I would just love to think about in the morning but not in bed. Even with it I usually lay in bed about 30 minutes. When Evan and hit the bed, they are asleep. Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: kgreeceman@... Guest guest Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Betty, I can relate!! However, Karac wouldn't let me get email while he is awake; he wants me to watch "Land Before Time" with him. LOL, Pat K Quote

Guest guest Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 Thanks, will check this out. Med. change is taking effect...yippy, sleeping better at night, but some nights, he will wake and stay up.......till 6-7am w/o a nap the next day. Are these products you list free of all that GNC is (was)? Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I just ordered two bottles on ebay for my son. The last time I did get the chewable melatonin through Kirkman Labs, but since I filed for bankruptcy I no longer have a credit card and did not want to wait for mail order since he was on his last pill earlier in the week. The pills I got from Kirkman were 1 mg but these I got say 500 mcg, what exactly is that? My son is almost 10 and 75 pounds, should I give him half a pill to make sure the dosage is not too high? Bonnie ==============pkuenstler@... wrote: Thanks, I read the article. I like to be aware of possible side effects. Pat Quote
Guest guest Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Well, I did a web search since I never learned metrics either and here is what I found. 1 Milligram = 1000 Micrograms ... So the 500 mcg is half the 1 mg. That might even be all he needs. Evan is 111 lbs now and takes the 3 mg melatonin. I crush his up and give it to him.
