Guest guest
I would reccomend that you talk to Wade Bader at Bader Orthotics in Tampa. His AFOs are the only ones that I like. Basically they are made like metal braces but with kevlar and graphite. He will work with your local orthotist. He would make the casts and Wade would make the AFOs. He will make them in any color or pattern. I have some that are camo. His website is www.readypreg.com. Hit the central fabrication button to see examples of his work. His phone number is 813 962 6100. I really like him. He really tries hard to please his customers. Bob

Guest guest
Here is my experience with clicking metal hinged AFOs. I found the clicking was do to the hinge springs catching on the screw tension adjustment threads. To prevent the spring catching, you first need to have the correct size and strength spring installed. Then the cut ends of the springs need to be ground off so there are no sharp edges to catch in the threads. A light coating of grease applied to the springs and stop ball bearings such as an all temperature type used on bicycle chains is best. There should not be any slack in the hinges when the stop ball bearings contact the hinge stops in the relaxed AFO position. Another problem is that the hinge screw bearings and nut sleeves that are made of stainless steel become worn and need to be replaced often if the AFOs are worn by a very active person. To use stairs and drive a vehicle, hinged AFOs are a must for me. I use metal AFOs that give me good lateral support to help with balance and the hinges allow me to walk on uneven ground. Hardened aluminum is much stronger and lighter than stainless steel and the best choice for hinged AFOs.
