Hi Kerry, well I do have bad knees...but with you you probably just strained it. Try not to do anything too hard on them for a while and watch how you do everyday things so that you won't strain it again. Firm Cardio (the crosstrainers), it was pretty good, but I didn't use weight for most of it, used three lbs for my shoulders, 5 lbs for my biceps, pecs, and back, no weight at all for lunges, squats and dips. I used a 4" step for the stepping routines and an 8" step for leg presses. My knee behaved very well with this workout it was after that I had trouble. I noticed it while cleaning out my fridge. I have a bad habit of going down on one knee, my right, the one that's bothering me. I've noticed that the quad stretch bothers it as well, this is crazy, I've never had trouble like this before. You'd think if it was going to hurt it would hurt all the time, but it doesn't, it's always good the next day. I'm not sure if things just need to be strengthened or what the case is.Kerry

Hi Jen,

I guess I could have strained it, on one of my other lists I was asked if I could have arthritis in my knee. I have noticed that my knees hurt when it's cold out, so maybe that's a possibility. I'm hoping it's just a strain.

Thanks,

Kerry

I'm sorry you are going through the same thing too. It's a real pain in the neck because you feel like doing a certain workout only to find that you can't due to your knees.

I wonder if I should start taking Glucosamine. Would that help? I also enjoy the Firm workouts.

Kerry,

If it is arthritis it may or may not be affected by cold and wet weather. Are your knees hot and red or even very cold when they're hurting and you haven't banged them at all? Are the joint areas swollen? If so, these are indications that it could be arthritis. Does the pain feel like a muscle strain or "something else" (something deeper maybe)? Do they hurt when you walk up steps or down steps or is it anytime, anywhere? I have rheumatoid arthritis and have had it since I was at least 12 or so. It has affected my knees in the past but not too much lately. When it is active I notice that stairs, especially going down bothers them. Also, I often have one knee acting up but not usually both at the same time. Other people have both at the same time. Rheumatoid arthritis varies tremendously from individual to individual. My flares are not normally influenced by weather. The pain is often more of an ache, deep in the body (deep in the joints) and definitely not a muscle strain kind of pain. Usually it is a dull ache I can ignore, sometimes I have to take Motrin to quiet it, sometimes it is screaming (and nothing helps). Often when I try to make the flaring joint work (like going up and down stairs or trying to open a bottle with my fingers when they are flaring) I get very sharp pains until I stop (then I just have the ache again, a little louder for a while). If it is arthritis then doctors recommend that you rest affected joints during active flares because you can cause more damage then. I can usually still swim (which is highly recommended for arthritis) but definitely no step aerobics. When it is really bad I'm in too much pain and too fatigued to do any exercise so I just wait for it to pass and take it easy (thankfully that doesn't happen too often; my RA goes in and out of remission but most days I'm good to do whatever I want and can easily ignore the ache). If any of this sounds familiar then you might want to have a doctor check it out to make sure you're exercising safely for arthritic joints. Good luck!

Glucosamine helps osteoarthritis but it does not help rheumatoid arthritis. It still might help you, but just wanted you to know it is not a wonder pill/cure-all the way the commercials make it sound. Do some research and if your knees keep bothering you change your workouts and see if they get better and consider having a doctor, especially one who knows about arthritis check you out and see if they recommend glucosamine or anything else.

You are absolutely right on this one. However, most people with arthritis in just one area (ie. knees) have it from excessive stress to the area (ie. over doing workouts), so I would assume it is osteoarthritis for someone who is actively exercising. Personally, I'd still have a doctor look at it, but would try the herbal remedies before the drug therapies.

I don't know an awful lot about arthritis but my knees aren't hot and red or swollen at all. I don't recall banging my knee, but it could have happened and I forgot about it.

Your RA sounds like a real obstacle to work around. It is good that you are still exercising, I've heard that exercise helps.

Take care

Hi , I have Osteo Arthritis and that's

different from rheumatoid arthritis and the causes are

different as well.

I hurt my left knee when doing Judo - I pulled

the ligament in my knee and after that my knee cap

would dislocate...after a while I got Osteo arthritis

in my knee...actually I have arthritic spurs under my

knee cap...NOT much fun.

Using a heating pad or icy hot helps my knees a

lot!

Anyway Kerry, you should have a dr. look at your knee!

Hi Jen,

Your knee experiences do not sound like much fun.

Thank you for the advice to have a Dr. look at my knee I plan on it,

but can't get in for a physical until December the 19th. Silly me I

had an appointment on the 17th of Oct but wrote down my appointment

for Nov, instead of Oct. now I have to wait longer....grrrrrr.....

OUCH! I didn't know (until I read this and another post, from Tonya I think) that osteo was caused by issues in exercising (almost wrote "caused by exercise" but I know it isn't that). Thanks for the education and I hope you and others dealing with this can find relief!

Well my osteoarthritis was caused from my knee

dislocating because my knee caps are on the outside

(side) of my knee rather than in the middle -- the

sports medicine Dr. I went to told me that 1 and 4

girls have that problem... I started having mine when

I was 13 and took a Judo class. During one of the

trips I pulled the ligaments in my knee then after

that it started dislocating but it always came back

into the socket.

So Osteo-arthritis can be caused my an injury or

high impact exercise etc.... not always exercise

though...

School and I couldn't walk for about a week...up til

then I had perfect attendence! Luckily I still got my

attendence award at the end of the year!

Both of my knees are aching now because it dropped

down into the 30's in Michigan :(
