although i have never gone through this, i would think an ortho would be able to remove a cast. when we thought we may have to remove lexi's at one point during her first cast due to a touch of pneumonia, even her ped was willing to do it. from what i saw in erie, it was a just a cut at the top and one at the bottom then they opened to remove it. i remember heathter johnson telling me once a father even removed his child's with an electric saw....not that i would recommend that! Where should I go to get cast removed

We would like to remove Ian's cast here before going up to Erie (that way we don't have to rush at the crack of dawn to get up there on time). What type of place would be willing to do this for us? Do I call our previous ortho (shudder) or a hospital????

This is Ian's first cast, correct? I would do it in Erie. These are VERY specialized casts, and while all casts are removed in pretty much the same way, I would HATE for anything to happen. Not to mention, I would think the Dr is Erie would like to see how Ian did with the cast overall. Were there any cracks? Any spaces that could be fitted better? Do they need to build something up more? Too many variables! Add to that, you would probably have to pay another co-pay to have someone that may not even understand WHY your son has this cast. So my suggestion is to go up the night before and get a good night's sleep! This is actually his third cast. I talked with Dr. K and he was okay with us having it removed here.

Then I would ask your ped for a recommendation as to where it can be done. Sorry about havign the wrong number cast, hard to keep up when so many of "our" kids are having them done! Good luck! Hey , I would suggest just calling your previous Ortho if

that's where your insurance covered & it's convenient location wise...

The actual Dr. probably wouldn't even have to see him to just schedule

him for a cast removal, it seemed to be a pretty cut & dry walk in &

out process at Children's Hospital here (aside from her case of

course) and you could reference him from your prior visits explaining

your in the middle of the scoli. treatment elsewhere but want it off

before you go there. They'd know him from prior & be equipped to get

an x-ray too if you wanted.

If you can find an ortho that treats kids by casting, that's the best shot. We found an ortho locally that does casting, but not the Mehta type. They allowed us to come in first thing in the morning to just cut it off, didn't have to see the doc, so it was in and out. In fact, the doc stopped in to look at Marissa because he was very interested in our progress etc. I would call your previous ortho, maybe they wouldn't mind just cutting it off, it's a simple procedure.

I think an individual office visit would be much faster than going to a hospital. I'm sure you want it to be painless and quick so that you can get Ian into the tub for some much deserved fun.

Hoe much did they charge you Jerry? We called an ortho in new port beach cal to see if they'ed be willing to take cole's cast of in aug. when we go for our beach tri, and they said it would be around $400. we said forget it, we'll cut it off ourselves! I called our ortho. here in cleve., and they MAYBE we'll cut it off. since cole was not a current kid of theirs, it would be a conflict of interest and they don't know what has been going on in the last year inregards to treatment.I can't believe how everyone is making such a big deal about a 5 second saw procedure. I also need advice. and coleJerry Lamarre <gerard_lamarre@...> wrote: , If you can find an ortho that treats kids by casting, that's the best shot. I agree with Tracey, but I just went through this today. Our ped and all the ortho's here won't even consider removing . We have to go up Monday to have Evan's 2nd cast, this first one is getting too tight. Good luck, I know how it is with the travel, we were hoping to have it removed locally as well and EvanTracey <pthahn@...> wrote: although i have never gone through this, i would think an ortho would be able to remove a cast. when we thought we may have to remove lexi's at one point during her first cast due to a touch of pneumonia, even her ped was willing to do it. from what i saw in erie, it was a just a cut at the top and one at the bottom then they opened to

,

Find an ortho that you can have Cole become one of their patients IF the cast thing didn't work out. That's what we did. We have our local ortho on call IF there's emergencies etc that need help versus going to Erie. Once this is set up, they'll cut the cast off due to you being a "registered patient" of the facility. Believe it or not, we didn't get charged for Marissa's cast removal. It took five minutes and we didn't see the doc so the nurse didn't charge us.

I guess it's all up to who you can hook up with locally. I'd keep trying. It's important to have access to services/help when you need them.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads up. Dr. Abel does casting at UVA...he might be willing to remove it if no one else will do it for me. I can't believe people refuse to remove it. What was their reasoning?

Yeah, Dr. K requested that we get it off no more than 24 hours prior to going up there for the new cast. Thanks for the advice :).

Most told me that since he was a "ped. patient" they usually refer them out and don't work on them locally. Also, they were concerned that he wasn't their patient and that they would, pretty much, "mess" up the work that Dr. had done. I explained I just needed it cut off, but I couldn't get anyone to. I could drive to Duke which is 3hrs each way and the ped. ortho there would, but then we have to be in Erie that night for him to be at Shriners by 6AM Tuesday, so there's no advantage there! Good luck-maybe since you're in a bigger area (we are in a more rural area) someone will be glad to help you out. and Evan Claflin <noellesmommy@...> wrote: , Thanks for the heads up. I'll try to get my husband to call our ortho that we say back in October. I am wimping out on asking. If not, I have a feeling UVA would cut it off for us.
