have either the makings of or some gf bread, most of the rest i can do

around here. its not going to be an easy transition, but i hope to be gf

Terri,

I notice that the study was in Belgium, and it can be assumed the

products were European ones. I doubt many of the brands are the same as

in the US.

I have noticed differing potency among the brands I have tried over the

years. Like others, I like the cheaper ones, but only if they work. The

best two brands I have used, I say best because I KNOW they work for me

and my family, are Solaray Multi-Dophilus and Jarrow-Dophilus.

There are other good brands available, many overpriced, but you can tell

if they are working when they make a cold go away, or prevent the onset

of one. Or, solve diahrrea or constipation overnight.

Jim,

Glad you shared this as I was just going to purchase some. As a consumer I

tend to trust but since being on Dr. Jon's list and part of his co-op my eyes

have been opened. You know the co-op tests all the products they are

interested in selling... most of which have not passed their criteria. I

commend them for this testing and trust the products I'm buying plus the

price is great. (just my personal feeling, not an advertisement)

The web page where the probiotic info was published was by an American Dr. I

did see where the study was done. I also saw where this Dr. suggested a

certain product that he finds acceptable. I don't know that he specifically

names many products in his newsletters. I do like his website... find alot of

good info but that article makes me wonder. Maybe I'll send them a note...

In even simpler terms, they also have them at Longs on the shelf

right by the Lactiad, etc..... " Probiatica, made by the makers of

Immodium. " Contains Lactobacobacillus Reuteri, 100 million cells per

tablet - 60 chewable lemon tablets, about 6 bucks.......I take them

EVERY time I take antibiotics! VERY cheap, very easy!

Hi, For us, the blend of 6 strains (260 billion CFU per gm) from Custom Ptobiotics works well. Dana,

I would take either probiotics OR at least a couple tablespoons of plain,

organic yogurt every day. You can mix that into a smoothie or something that he

will eat/drink. I believe they do about the same thing.

P.S. How is your son doing?

With the caveat again that probiotics shouldn't be required at

all as you should be growing your own in-situ using their natural

food, probiotics need food to survive so taking them with food at

least exposes them to some unknown percentage that they might be

able to survive on. Basically you're starving ouit your probiotic

culture right now so I don't know what else to tell you.

Probiotic high-dosing might get you by until you can get your

bowel culture under control, but even high-dosing will not

populate the bowel contents; it will only propose a culture that

you still have to feed. That said, VSL#3 is a very potent

approach.

Be careful of what you pick if you decide to go that route-many probiotics are

dairy based. We have never tried any with Maddie-our PID (also allergic to

dairy)-but her older sister swears by just plain old acidophilus. She was having

an upset stomach all the time-started taking just the cheap one from Wal-Mart,

and is a different person.

Valarie,

Both of our kids use Culturelle. It was recommended by our GI,

pediatrician, and GSD specialist on separate occasions. It's in a capsule

form, but if your kids can't swallow pills (ours can't) you can open it up

and dissolve in water or another liquid to get them to take it. Ours have g

tubes, so it's not an issue, but I would think if you put it in juice that

it would mask it pretty well.

Subject: probiotics

Ive been doing some reading about this, and am curious about the

benefits of probiotics.

I went to a Whole Foods yesterday, and the selection was just so

overwhelming, I had no idea waht I was looking at.

Bc during the winter, my kids and I usually need multiple abx and

steroids, and bc we are all prone to recurrent thrush, I thought this

might be beneficial. I have in the past used just plain acidophilus

but wondered if actual probiotics would be of more help?

Also, I had purchased the yogurt with probiotic, but have to wonder if

this has any benefit or is just a marketing ploy? At any rate, two of

my kids are off dairy so the yogurt wouldnt help them at all, anyway.

We dont see ID until late Dec, and I'd like to start soon with this to

see if it helps, since we are already getting started on

illnesses/steroids this winter.

Does anyone have any they would recommend? Im just clueless as to what

would be the best here.

Thanks,

The absolute best way to consume a probiotic is by consuming cultured foods.

Commercial yogurt is not very good, but homemade yogurt and keifer is (ferment

it for 24 hours, not 6 like the yogurt maker says). If you can't do dairy, make

cultured vegetables. If you don't want to make them, you can order them on line
