Guest guest
Hi all, I'm getting ready to change up my routine (goal is still losing fat and gaining muscle) and I remember reading here and also somewhere else that if you are going to do weight-training and cardio on the same day it is far better to... ....is it do weights first and continue into cardio because your heart rate and fat burning is up from doing the weights and you get more fat burning from the minutes you do cardio? Trying to remember and couldn't find the old posts. Thanks, Sherry
Guest guest
You are correct. It's not BFL, but that is correct weights then cardio. Guest guest
Another reason to do the weights first is so that you are not tired out and can lift more with better form. Guest guest
Yep, like everybody else said, weights first. Here's an old post on it: ~~ You really want to do cardio after weights if you're doing them together. Weight training requires a lot of glycogen. That's stored carbohydrate in your muscles and liver. When you lift weights first, you burn up the glycogen supply as your initial fuel source. Then once you start your cardio your body will immediately dip into your fat stores for energy. It's a cool trick! If you do it the other way around (cardio first), you spend the first 20 minutes burning glycogen, not fat. Then you move on to weights where you actually need the glycogen. It's not there, your energy level is blah, your weight workout is weak, and your fat burning is compromised. Now, there's nothing wrong with a 5-10 minute warm-up on the treadmill before lifting weights, but if you're planning to really scare your fat cells do it after you lift. Guest guest
The idea behind the weights then cardio is that you will use up most of your stored glycogen doing the weights and then there won't be a bunch of carbs still hanging around when you do the cardio so the fat stores will be used for energy. After nearly five years living the BFL life I can no longer do weights first. Weight workouts leave me so exhausted that all I want to do is curl up and recover. I have to do cardio first if I'm doing them both on the same day. The cardio serves as a muscle warmup, and between the cardio and the weights I have a creatine laced Myoplex lite then proceed to the weight workout. It is an unorthodox practice I know, but it prevents muscle from being eaten after the cardio fuel is gone. At the end of the week there still is the calories in/calories out issue to consider, and it ends up about the same. If you have the time you could also do cardio in one session and weights later in the day in another session. Stasia
