Guest guest
We just started doing gastric sleeve - what are issues we should be aware of? Is there any dumping with this? Same diet progression? Thanks, Theresa Gilbert 88 MDG, WPAFB, OH
Guest guest
Hi! We do not see very many sleeve patient due to lack of insurance coverage but I feel it's starting to change. Because their is no malabsorption with the sleeve, I use the gastric band guidelines with my patients. I found a really neat education packet from Hopkins Hospital that may be helpful for you. I don't make B12 mandatory, but I find most of my patient are taking roughly 1000 mcg a wk similar to bypass patients. When you mention it may help with energy they tend to jump on that! http://www.hopkinsbayview.org/bariatrics/docs/nutrition_sleeve.pdf I hope this link works! > > The surgeon I work for is staring to do the gastric sleeve. > > I " m looking for post op guidelines. > > THANK YOU >
Guest guest
We treat it like a gastric bypass. With the fundus removed, you get significantly less intrinsic factor and HCl (making it hard to cleave many vitamins from complexes in food). Deficiencies in the literature include Fe, B12, Cu, thiamin, and Ca. We also suggest BMD testing consistent with the National Osteoporosis Foundation recommendations. There are some good webinars on gastric sleeve in the Healthcare Professionals section of the Bariatric Advantage website.
