Guest guest
Hi , I have a pediatric protocol. But you have to look at the reason for the constipation. Narcotics? Bad diet? Surgical procedure, what type? Age? Sometimes with constipation, the doctors will try to get more fiber and fluids in the patient. If that doesn't work, they start them on stool softeners daily. Miralax used to be prescription, but is over the counter and can be used to get things moving initially, but you don't want laxative dependence. What has this patient tried already, how old and what is the clinical status? To the rest of the group - if you have a generic protocol, I would be interested (for adults who have had bariatric surgery). The other thing you need to be aware of is that small bowel obstruction is a risk in bariatric surgery and you want to PREVENT this. If it happens, you need to identify and have the surgeon intervene. Generally granular bulking agents are avoided in this particular population because they can cause obstruction.Other docs will add bulking agents to make everything even more confusing. Hydration is one of the most important things to emphasize. If on narcotics, there is a new med out to tx constipation associated with this class of med and I will have to look up the name if this is the case.
