It is good to see that even the Department of Health has picked up on the research showing that health visitors can prevent up to one third of postnatal depression cases, see http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/MediaCentre/Statements/DH_118690They write:'The University of Leicester has released the findings of a study which shows that women are less likely to become depressed in the year after childbirth if they have an NHS health visitor who has undergone additional mental health training. In response, a Department of Health spokesperson said,"Despite

commitments to deliver more care in the community, the number of health

visitors has fallen substantially in recent years. The Government has committed to increasing the number of health visitors and to focusing Sure Start to ensure that all families get high quality services. Ministers are currently looking at how best to deliver this commitment, and will be working across Government and with partner organisations. We

are working with the profession and NHS to improve health visiting services for all families, including additional care packages where needed." 'I don't think I can ever recall a DH statement about research before and it is good to have it confirmed that they are working behind the scenes to formulate a plan to increase the number of health visitors. I hope this messsage reaches the 'troops on the ground' who are exhausted and feel as if there has been a long silence since the new government came in.
