Thanks for this interesting query Lesley, and to for following up. I would also be interested in hearing about whether it is the job of health visiting or the training that is off-putting as a career pathway for nursery nurses and other children's services colleagues. If it had been possible to do a degree in health visiting at the time you were doing your BA, would you have chosen that? It is of particular interest, as the NMC are just starting their review of the third part of the register and HV regulation.best wishesOn 30 Dec 2011, at 09:26, wrote: Dear LesleyThank you for your query. Hi and Lesley

I thought your email was very interesting Lesley as it is a conversation I have had on many occasions with Nursery Nurses who are very experienced in practice and who also have developed academically and have degrees.

I was thinking they would be good candidates for the courses being run to lead to health visiting qualification for graduates with related degrees.

I think the Universities are targeting those with degrees without professional qualifications but perhaps they need to widen the entry gate and look at nursery nurses as well.

We just need to be brave and really accept that direct entry to health visiting through a range of options is the future!

Hi Lesley/,

I’m intrigued that, like many of your nursery nurse colleagues, you have no desire to work as a health visitor but would wish to further your career and specialise in one particular area of child care. In the distant past it was hoped that it may be possible to develop specialist roles as a generalist health visitor indeed, the suggestion was that these specialisms could be developed and recruited to so that skills could be kept within teams. The shift however, seems to have been to value specialists over generalists and effectively remove them from the teams, ending up, rather like the Olympic rowers, responding to the injunctions of those on bicycles who were formerly in the boat doing the rowing. Perhaps if the Task Force could revisit this aspect of practice to allow HVs to develop particular aspects of their work whilst remaining as generalists then more nursery nurses would consider becoming health visitors. Perhaps the “sell,†to the commissioners would be that we can offer a range of Swiss Army knives that could be better adapted to meet local needs. Apologies for the metaphors and similes. New Year resolution to cut down.

Best wishes,

Terry McGinn

Hello Terry

I did post a very long winded reply to but the short reply is I think

nursery nursing is a valid career/profession in itself and we have to become

better at stating that - compulsory registration and training standards would go

a long way to help.

In addition I don't want to spend another 6 years training to become a

quasi-social worker and get further removed from what I love to do and am good

at. I see so many of my HV colleagues struggle with less clearly defined roles

which seem to involve them taking on increasing amounts of social work issues

and moving them further away from health and the role they were trained to do.

( I was employed in social work and have no desire to go back!)

kind regards

Lesley

Ps I like a good metaphor - I have made the resolution to use fewer brackets and

exclamation marks - it's not working out so well....

Hello, Lesley,

I don't think that your reply was long-winded. Indeed I think it was extremely interesting and enlightening and very much reflects my own views on what nursery nurses should be doing in skill mix teams.

Back in the mid-nineties our health visiting service in Enfield ran a parenting support project and we employed two excellent nursery nurses as an addition to the health visiting team. They both had degrees although, if I remember correctly not in a child care related field. There weren't many early years degree courses about then, I think.

They had wonderful skills helping parents with the sorts of interventions that you describe. We (the HVs) would refer families to them who required extra support, perhaps on a weekly basis to help them with some parenting difficulty i.e. potty training, weaning, behavioural difficulties etc. They were an excellent resource for the team.

Eventually the money ran out and the project ended with everyone agreeing as to its success. Later, however, when health visitors became more scarce other nursery nurses were added to the team. I think their role has probably now evolved into what you describe. Perhaps when we have grown in numbers again nursery nurses will still be employed as additions to the team with full respect for the additional skills that they bring.

Best wishes,
