Manager

Stationary Source Division/Substance Evaluation Section

Air Resources Board/CalEPA

1001 I Street,

P.O. Box 2815

Sacramento, CA 95812

Dear Mr. Aguila:

It has come to my attention that on September 28 the California Air

Resources Board will vote on proposed regulations concerning formaldehyde

emissions

in composite wood products. As a California parent, I am pleased to see this

issue dealt with on a statewide level.

My primary concern is not kitchen cabinets in homes. One can choose what

cabinets they purchase. I am most concerned about the cabinets, shelving and

institutional furniture our children come in contact with at school. The

children have no choice in the matter.

CARB’s own findings cite formaldehyde as a human carcinogen with no known

minimum level of exposure before symptoms of illness occur. This is not the

type of substance that should be released within the air of our schools. This

is

not the type of substance our children should be breathing.

Please, as parents, I urge you to enact standards to regulate this poisonous

substance. The proposed regulations before you, have the potential to be as

much benefit to the citizens of California as your successful efforts to

severely limit tobacco exposure.

Sincerely,

Sharon Kramer
