It seems to me that most of us have experienced - for one reason or

another- similarities with our children resulting in plagio.

spent tons of time in her bouncy seat and often times it was the only

place she would sleep as well as her carseat and swing. She had

colic. As I pulled out her photo album tonight and looked over her

pics, her head was always tilted to the right. According to the Dr.

she does have some tightness in her neck muscles. She was head down

for probably the last month of my pregnancy, big girl 8 lbs. 3 oz.,

born vaginally, use of pitocin, vac extraction, she was actually

stuck in the birth canal because she had her hands upside of her head

which made her wide passing through and she spent too much time (in

my opinion) with her head partially out while I was contracting, on

her birth records it states positional molding. I guess what I am

really trying to say here is that there are numerous factors

contributing to plagio aside from the SIDS - back to sleep - and I am

just trying to classify them? Also today at Cranial Tech, they told

me she has brachycephaly...I was upset that she couldn't be cast and

I didn't ask too many questions. Anyone have info on that Please fill

me in? Thanks, Patty

Hanna's head flattening was also a result of her positioning in-utero.

When she popped out, her poor little nose was smashed flat sideways to

her face!! Nobody bothered to address whether or not the opposite

side of her squished melon might be flat too. We didn't discover

the flat-spot (thus the connection to in-utero position) till 1 month or

so.

Shari - Thanks for writing to me, your email was very comforting, I am hoping

to have her cast tomm or Friday depending on the bump on her noggin! Poor

kid, I've had ice on her head every other hour cause I just want that part

over with.....They did show me the two types of bands that will have

to wear, the second one resembles more of a helmet than a band but I have

found the people at Cranial Tech here in Charlotte wonderful. I have added

your email addy to my address book cause I am sure I will have tons of

questions. Again, thank you! Patty

I'm sorry that it was a disappointing day for you, Patty.

They couldn't cast her at all, or they couldn't cast her today? I

know that Cranial Technologies, Inc. has bands for brachycephaly, one

of the before/after pictures on their home page is a boy with a

brachycephalic head shape. And I also know that they've been really

good in trying to get me info to share with the neurosurgeon on

scaphocephalic head shape... that they have a specific band for. (and

they have thre different bands) Brachycephaly is described on the

Texas Cleft and Craniofacial Center Home Page stating " the forehead

is bulging and flattened and skull is shortened in length "

http://www.plagiocephaly.org/ has links to several craniofacial

institutes that describe positional molding.

Did they want x-rays done before they cast? (or have you already gone

that route?)

Take Care.

Patty--

My son Will has brachycephaly. He's been wearing his band for almost

a month now and at 11 months he's showing a lot more change than we expected.

But it does go slowly. The casting part isn't bad. Really. Just...well...odd.

(An 8 year old would be fascinated by the experience.) We'll probably have

to have Will cast 3 or 4 times. So it goes.

The hard part with his brachycephaly is getting a headband to fit. The

back and top of his head are very flat. He looks almost normal from the

front, but from the side he has this inverted pyramid thing going. His

head is pushed up in the back and it bulges slightly at the sides. Cranial

Tech will decide which band will work best for your daughter after the

casting. So far they've been terrific at following up with Will. I've gotten

straight answers and wonderfully supportive feedback from Jeanne Pomatto.

We never had xrays, CT scans or an MRI done. The neurosurgeon said his

sutures are open and that his "deformity" is cosmetic. Whew! Once we decided

to get the band it's simply been a matter of staying active and alert about;

how it fits, his comfort and our stress level over the whole thing. Honestly,

he looks strange to us with his band off! He doesn't seem to mind wearing

it, and has never fought us when we put it on his head. We smile, laugh

with him and act as if it's the most normal thing in the world. We ignore

people who stare oddly at him. We chat happily with people who ask why

he's wearing it.

And every day we count our blessings that this is not a big deal compared

to some of the things other parents go through.

A visit to Los Angeles Children's Hospital yesterday smacked any self-pity

we might have had straight out of our heads.

Please feel free to email me with any questions about Will's treatment.

Oh, I should mention that our insurance company paid 80% without asking

any questions. Finally! Something went smoothly!!!

Best of luck to you and your little one--

Shari
