Jun 10, 2006,

Objective:

This report presents recommendations that were developed in the

aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita that should be useful to

public health practitioners, healthcare providers, building

managers, and others who are responsible for buildings in situations

in which exposure to mold is an issue. The goal of this report is to

provide information on which to base decisions on how to limit

exposure to mold contaminated buildings and how to identify and

prevent mold-related health effects, which might result after

extensive water damage following major hurricanes or floods. Upon

completion of this educational activity, the reader should be able

to 1) describe the factors that promote mold growth; 2) describe the

most appropriate means of assessing exposure to mold; 3) describe

the remediation steps used to clean up mold growth based on the

degree of contamination; 4) describe the role of personal protective

equipment in minimizing exposure to mold; and 5) describe the most

common health effects from exposure to mold.
