I couldn't believe that after all these years of asking, he was just going to keep stringing me along and never even give me a definite answer as to whether he was EVER going to investigate mold as I had asked at the very beginning of the CFS epidemic when my illness started after I inhaled a crapload of mold and fell flat on the ground. So I slammed my fist on his desk and yelled " Just at least tell me YES OR NO! " And, of course - the answer was " no " . His receptionists just glared at me with expressions of pure hatred. They thought I was completely insane for daring to take issue with the world famous doctor who was one of the heroes of the CFS epidemic. But after I left his practice and started " extreme avoidance " , I would stop by and drop off information about mold with one of the receptionists, and I know that Dr read it, for although he refused to ever speak to me again, when two of his patients that had recovered on ampligen relapsed again, he told them to move out of their moldy houses: a major difference from when he was telling me that he thought that this strategy wouldn't help and mold wasn't the problem. Moving helped to prevent these two patients from getting worse, but since they know nothing of making a more concerted effort at avoidance as I had done, they moved their possessions with them, and they haven't improved much since then. I can't totally put all the blame on doctors for refusing to listen to something that might help, because I spent years going to CFS support groups and finding people expressing " The Right Clues " for mold reactivity, and when I told them how much avoidance had helped me - they would rhetorically demand " Who the Hell do you think you are? " which is a far stronger expression of disinterest than I got from doctors. It's ironic that my sensitivity would tell me that they were covered with mold and yet they vehemently denied it because their doctors had told them that mold reactivity is impossible. Many had suspected it, but they believed their doctors and totally denounced the concept and didn't want to hear a word about it. So if I seem a bit arrogant at times, it's because I not only got slammed from doctors, but was treated even worse by sick people reeking with mold who thought it was arrogant and presumptuous of me to think that I could tell them anything or knew something that doctors did not. Years of being treated this way tends to make a person somewhat defensive. I probably just should have given up and not wasted my time as Rick advised me to, but I really wanted this phenomenon to be investigated, there is no one else who was in my position can say the things I can about the origins of CFS, and I just couldn't believe CFSers looking desperately for anything at all that might help would continue to treat me this way. Also it's because what I am thinking is " Who am I? I'm the CFS and mold survivor who got to go out and climb mountains thanks to mold avoidance, and you're a damned fool to be so quick to flush this information down the toilet " . - --------------------------------- Messenger with Voice. Guest guest
Barb, The matter goes much deeper and is much more insidious than what you describe. Since about the year 2000, industry has been given free reign over many aspects of our lives. By only having one party controlling the Presidency, the House and the Senate, the checks and balances of government are not there. There is too much power by one school of thought. And that school of thought strongly supports commerce and industry. As it pertains to the mold issue, the concept of " not plausible " is based on a foundation that any high school student would be able to see through as not sound science. Yet, it was endorsed by major medical associations, primarily ACOEM. It was then given the blessing of industry with the assistance of the US Chamber of Commerce. The primary reason why you can't medical treatment is because to acknowledge these illnesses as legitimate, would increase financial liability for stakeholders. The way it is controlled is by expert defense witnesses in mold litigation being given carte blanche to write national medical protocol. Thus " not plausible " . Many of these national policy writers involved in the mold issue have never even touched mold or mycotoxins within a lab setting. They have never treated a patient as they are PhDs. They not even qualified to exam humans, or even animals. All they really do is write review papers that they call state of the art, but they really are not state of the art. They only cite what they want to be seen that supports their point of view. But the problem goes even deeper than this. In trying to understand how this deceit could occur within medicine, I began to speak to doctors. By and large, the doctors are also being victimized by the situation. Regarding mold, they are being specifically fed propaganda that all you really want is to go to court and get money from some poor building owner. The medical associations, that write medical protocol have written in a manner that is friendly to the insurance industry and hostile to you. Not just regarding mold, but many illnesses. Workers comp is a primary area that has been subjected to much questionable guidelines. Doctors can't treat their patients under these guidelines and those who do, become harassed and ostracized. Some have had their licenses challenged or even taken away. The process is called " sham peer review " . It is happening all across the country with increasing frequency. And oddly, but probably not oddly, the documents of complaint against many of these doctors look very similar. They vary little from state to state. What appears to be happening is that there is benefit to being within the inner circle of medical associations. And everyone else can go to hell. In Ca, the guidelines for workers' comp that were written by ACOEM, have caused such a problem, there was a state Senate meeting on the matter about a month ago. Dcotors brought in their patients and spoke together of how industry is limiting proper care. In Washington, there was a large group of doctors that held a Congressional briefing (primarily surgeons that could not operate because insurance said it would not cover it - they challenged and were harassed). In Mass, just last week there was an article in Boston Globe of a doctor complaining of this. He is actually doing things that are illegal in order to treat his patients. This is not a quack doctor, he is Harvard educated. And yes, many of our mold doctors are feeling the heat. So, when you get right to it, it is not merely rude doctors that treat you like dirt because of misinfomation. It is not lack of understanding of these illnesses. It is not even the mold itself that is a problem. It is the underlying cause of greed and corruption allowed to run rampant in this country since about the year 2000. I am not a Republican or a Democrat. But, I think Bush is either an idiot or a very evil man. Under his stewardship, the rats have taken over the ship. Sharon Although I know a lot of doctors probably went into the field due hoping to make a good living rather than because they wanted to " take care of people " , I really think the fault lies in medical schools. This is the way they are taught. Line these symptoms up with this pill and those symptoms up with that pill, period. I've heard the pharmaceutical industry picks up the bill for a lot of medical education, providing the medical books, with glossy pictures of their pills. I've talked to some doctors who don't even seem to know how the body works.
Guest guest
Barb, I know exactly what you mean. When we first started down this path, I felt like Alice in Wonderland. What I was witnessing to be the truth, somehow was not perceived as the truth. " What is isn't and what isn't is " . It was from so many different angles it was hard to keep up with. Like, if mold exposure within an indoor environment can cause absolutely no harm to my family and myself, then why is it so dangerous for the workers that they have to wear HazMat suits? And if mold can grow within 48 hours, yet the remediation company let water sit in the flooring for six weeks before drying, then why would the insurer think mold could have been there before the leak? If my daughter, who is immunocompromised, and I, who is not, have similar symptoms after mold exposure then why is it logical to treat her symptoms with antifungals, but I am just making mine up? So yes, you are right, the doctors are a problem. But the question is Why are they a problem. To find the answer to all of the above lunacy situations, one simple has to follow the money. Its quite disgusting where the trail leads. All roads end up in Washington DC. Sharon Hi Sharon, I know you have been very involved in this and know about what you are speaking out. I realized my explanation was over simplified and situation was much more complicated. I guess what I wanted to say is that I don't think the problem is at the doctor level. However I did believe that at one time. Certainly there are too many doctors who just don't care very much. However I seen that there are also many caring doctors are being led to believe that mold is not a problem for people's health and as you pointed out by a number of evil practices going on.
