Guest guest
I was skimming the " Bigest Loser " message boards and a lot of the people there seem to think that the reason a lot of the contestants didn't lose any weight in week 2 is beacuse they gained muscle. Which made me wonder, how fast can a person gain 1 lb of muscle? (assuming he/she is eating & training correctly?) Zoe
Guest guest
Muscle growth will vary depending on a male or female and the age, but an overall average is about one half to one pound of muscle a month. The reason these people stopped losing weight is because their systems probably shut down. Restricting calories this low and working out as hard as they have without prior training stalled their metabolisms. Gaining muscle during week two is just not possible, it takes several weeks of training and recovery to start gaining muscle. Most of the lifestyle athletes who have posted on boards I have read are pretty disgusted with the mentality of the trainers on this show. They seem pretty clueless how to gain muscle and burn fat. The practice proven time and again is what we see taught in BFL. Starving and over exercising is never a long term solution to weight loss. Whatever weight these individuals lose, I would expect to be gained back quickly. Who would want to live like this as a lifestyle to weight control? It's sensationalism and a reality show to attract viewers to make money, not much else. Did I mention I happen to have an opinion of it? LOL! Guest guest
We don't have this TV programme here, but it sounds the worst type of reality TV I can imagine.. dangerous as well.. physically and emotionally. NZ
Guest guest
Gaining muscle requires twice as much patience as losing fat does. The food has to be really clean because your goal is to nourish the recovering muscle in such a way that it gives them all the building blocks they need. It requires a slight calorie excess. An extra BFL sized meal per day is often enough. Do your 20 minutes of really intense cardio. No more. It won't compromise muscle gain. Your lifting intensity has to be such that you have to really feel the lactic acid before stopping the set. At least I have to. Look for small changes. If this is your goal don't give up. The waiting will be well worth it. It is more normal to lose 1-3 lbs a week than the huge amounts of weight loss the first week. 2. I wonder if their bodies were just completely confused after that and hanging onto everything in order to " save from starving " .
