Sometimes I use 151 proof grain alcohol from the liquor store to tincture very aromatic materials, knowing that the little bit of that I add won't cloud the perfume, but you need 190 proof to have a clear perfume. If you want to experimet at first with the cheaper 150 proof, you'll have cloudy perfume, and it will be a bit weaker than the 190 stuff. Also, if you want to sell it or give it as gifts, you'll have to bottle it in a frosted or opaque bottle because of the way it looks. Also, you need 190 to dissolve many concretes, absolutes, or resins. Bourbonais > L'Hermite Aromatique Hello and All, Just to clear it up from my end... (it's now sounding to me like there may be more than one strength of Everclear?) The stuff I have is 95% alcohol, 190-proof. And if BevMo carries that, and if my cousins can bring it with them on the plane (which I'm seriously doubting, even in cargo), then I may have another quick source. Otherwise, maybe I'll have to look into the cost of a road trip to OR, 'cause I think Homeland Insanity is down on shipping alcohol just now. I get asked if I'm shipping alcohol every time I mail something from the post office here. But maybe it's just because I live in WA, the home of the Millennium Bombers... <snort> Cheers! It seems like a big deal to get or find the right kind. I've never used alchohol, but I feel its time in my growth as a natural perfumer, to start using it. I've never had a thing against using it or anything, I just never knew where to get any and I was always blending in the " hippie " /New Age/magickal oils tradition. The catch to using alcohol, is to get it in the highest percent or proof you can.... I tried some 100 proof (50%) only once..... That stuff functions much batter as an adjunct to Bloody s and Screwdrivers.... I also had some 150 proof (75%) Everclear once.....and it sorta worked with EO...... Since then I've always waited until I had 190 proof (95%)...... A perfumer's alcohol is preferred, but I don't have the $$ to invest in having a gallon of the stuff sent to me....... I be a mere dabbler....a quart lasts me quite a while..... Unless I'm doing tincture.... -- W. Bourbonais L'Hermite Aromatique
Guest guest
Here's an update on buying Everclear in California: I just spoke with my cousins after they went to BevMo looking for 190-proof (95%). They said that BevMo carries only the 151-proof. They asked why and were told that in the state of California, 151-proof is the highest alcohol content that can be legally sold. So, if you DO find the 190-proof stuff in CA, it's going to be sold under the table. If you have a supplier, I'd keep it pretty hush-hush, and take e-mails offline in order to protect the people who are selling it to you. Don't want them getting busted for doing you a perfume favor. : -) Regards, Andrine --------------------------------- Everyone is raving about the all-new beta. I can get the breakdown on it, but it too long to post here. I can't make head nor tail of it. Ruth
