I love Dobermans myself. We've talked about getting a dog for a long

time. I really want one to protect the house and the girls. However,

it MUST be kid friendly and never, ever snip at one of the girls.

Colleen & DogMomRuth, what is your opinion on that? I've always been

a cat person so I know notta about doggies. Oh and my mother in law

has a Boston Terrier who just had 7 puppies...so cute!!!! ~nanci

Hey Nanci,

I would recommend that you and your family do some research about

dogs.

Without the proper training, you could end up with an out of control

dog. You should consider what kind of life you have, and carefully

consider how much time you can commit to training a dog. Believe me,

unless it's a fairly small or calm breed, you need to at least, work

with basic obedience.

In addition to behavior, you should consider how much grooming a dog

needs and whether you can deal with a lot of hair around the house.

I have an Australian Shepherd and a Pekingese and I am constantly

picking up tumbleweeds of hair. I could Swiffer every day! Also,

certain breeds have predispositions to allergies and ear problems as

well.

Dobermans are great dogs...but in addition to needing a lot of

attention and training, you would have to carefully research

breeders because there are many defects and problems that dobes can

have. Though not all congenital defects are necessarily attributable

to breeding, a reputable breeder is a MUST!

Even though I have purebred dogs, they were both rescued. Unless you

plan on showing or breeding a dog...this is what I recommend.

Rescuing either a purebred or a mutt can be very rewarding. There is

the argument that you don't know exactly what they'll turn out like

because you haven't seen the parents...but seeing and meeting the

parents of a dog doesn't guarantee your pup will turn out the same.

I am of the school that says you get what you put into your dog, and

that should be lots of time, energy, and love. This is a HUGE

commitment. It is like having a permanent 2 year old for 12 to 16

years.

Oh yeah...I love Boston Terriers too...very cute little dogs.

Good luck!

Thank you Ruth! I really didn't think about all the training that has

to go into being a dog owner. Guess we better wait until we have more

time! ~n

YES! I love my Dobes but they do have quite a lot of health

problems, altho there are many breeds that do. If you decide to get

a Dobe, I can send you some info on REPUTABLE breeders that breed

for an ALL AROUND DOG: temperament, health, structure, etc.

For any dog, like Ruth says, a lot of training is involved. With

protection dogs/working dogs/some herding dogs, some extra training

might be necessary. Also with children, I would NEVER leave a dog

unattended with children. No matter what the dog is. I have seen too

many instances where a child gets bit, but the parent has no idea

what happened. Was it provoked, unprovoked, etc.?
