I don't know, Andrine, I have a strange vibe about all this lime and

alcohol -- I see the headlines: " aromatheapists and perfumes wind up

in ER with severe Berloque dermatitis reaction after getting all

liquored up and squeezing limes sloppily, as oil molecules fly

everywhere, landing on bare skin in the CA sun, and then they pass

out from the Tequila and wake up with brown marks all over their

exposed skin, expecially mouths and chins. " Yes, yes, I know, long

headline, but it works for me!

It was probably a working farm, . Here in Miami, most of the

lime groves were in the south of the county, and were destroyed

either by hurricanes of the ill-fated, poorly-thought-out citrus ban

we had here for several years. They need the extra warmth of south

Dade to thrive, and so you must live in a warm pocket of CA, since

they're aren't grown very much there, are they?

So when are you going to start producing lime blossom " neroli " or absolute? ;-)

You're not kidding they take forever to break down, and they are sharp as hell

for bare

feet, but I'm pretty sure my leaf mulch thing will work, given a year or so and

occasional

wetting down. It's 6 x 8 feet, and so far 2-3 feet deep. Also some sycamore

leaves. Staying

on topic, the mulch will hopefully develop a rich, earthy smell!

,

Don't get too excited about the smell! Our town is full of oaks and the city

collects our leaves for free, mulches them, then sells them back to us and they

stink up the entire town in the spring. The smell is similar to cow manure but

much stronger. Enjoy!

Great headline, Anya! But what you didn't see is that before we all

got liquored up, we'd retire to the shade of the lime trees, so we'd

save outselves from the dermatitis, and the seviche and the dark-

chocolate-dipped lime rinds would keep us from becoming too

intoxicated...

Yup -- the lime is always greener.... =: D

Most of the limes in stores here seem to come from Mexico, but the ones growing

in my

front yard are bigger and juicier, and there are a lot of happy orange trees

still around

here. Yes we do live in a warm valley away from the coast, which is only 20

miles away, but

10-20 degrees cooler.

Lime blossoms are just as fragrant as all citrus, but I'm just too lazy to

process them. Must

be all that sun.

Well, it's my birthday tomorrow, and we're cooking up some Indian food to eat

with all that

lime pickle etc., so come on over. Just head for LA, then go NW about 90 miles

and follow

signs for Ojai, then follow your nose.

Andrine,

We can't let down on his birthday! And since he gave such clear

directions...

Happy birthday ! By the way, I want your recipe for lime pickle. It's my

favorite Indian pickle. Well, maybe ginger pickle is, but I love lime pickle

too. It's really good on eggs!

OK, here's the recipe we used, which is pretty hot with this amount of chilli

pepper.

Amazingly, it was good to eat after just a week, though is improving with age:

http://www.nandyala.org/mahanandi/archives/2005/05/20/lime-pickle

I have to be honest, all credit for the lime pickle must go to my daughter Lucy,

who is

visiting from England for a few weeks and we're working on some perfume ideas

together.

She picked the limes and made the pickle and other limey stuff. I have tried to

persuade

her to join the group, no luck so far.
