GREENLAND - Mold has been found in the basement of the Weeks Public

Library.

Currently the officials are " trying to determine if there's a

problem and the severity of it, " said Town Administrator

.

said she met with two contractors and found a local company

willing to assess the mold level and perform removal for free.

also sent a letter to the library trustees and met with

some of the members.

Meanwhile, steps such as putting in a dehumidifier are being taken

to prevent any further spread of mold.

" As a patron, parent and taxpayer I believe the problem should be

addressed in a timely fashion as mold is a serious problem, " said

Greenland resident Laurie Lebar.

Nevertheless, she expressed her confidence in the library trustees,

characterizing them as a " a very diligent and conscientious group. "

Lebar said she is " certain they are addressing this problem. "

Presence of mold was first reported by Wallace Berg, the Greenland

health officer, during an April 13 visit to the library. He

presented a report to selectmen in which he recommended a number of

preventative measures.

Berg, who did not return calls, advised the selectmen to call in a

certified agency to survey the facility.

State Department of Environmental Services Indoor Air-Quality

Specialist Rhonda said there is " no legislation in New

Hampshire regarding mold growth. " She added there is also no set

standard for unsafe mold levels.

According to , the state does not certify mold remediators,

although reputable nationwide organizations do certify contractors.

" If you can see mold and smell mold, you need to correct the

problem, " said , who also suggested the root of the

infestation be addressed right away.

The basement of the library has been used as a children's room since

1979 when repairs were done to the dirt floors.
