Guest guest
I can testify to this. Probiotics changed my life. I have been taking them for years. Once I kept myself from a food poisoning ordeal by taking capsules of acidopholus several at one time. I now buy a brand that includes a new popular strain, called Bifodopholus. The better brands of probiotics need to be refrigerated, because they are actually alive. Your body can never have enough of " good bacteria " . I never heard of anyone overdosing on them. Texas Tech University researchers define probiotics as viable microorganisms that, when ingested, have a beneficial effect in preventing and treating specific pathologic conditions. They say that the best-studied are the lactic acid bacteria. But other probiotics used in humans include a variety of organisms: Escherichia coli, Streptococcus sp., Enterococcus sp. and various fungi. The researchers note that some probiotics include more than one strain of bacteria. Some of the mechanisms by which probiotics enhance intestinal health include stimulation of immunity, competition for limited nutrients and inhibition of epithelial and mucosal adherence. Inhibition of epithelial invasion and production of antimicrobial substances are other mechanisms that can be involved. Probiotics have also been shown to inhibit intestinal bacterial enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of colonic carcinogens. Delineation of their role in intestinal health requires that further studies be undertaken, the researchers note.
