Mould forces Yarmouth SPCA to close

By KRISTEN LIPSCOMBE Staff Reporter

Test results show that mould inside the Yarmouth SPCA has become

airborne, forcing both staff and animals to move out until major

renovations are completed.

Workers inside the facility started complaining about the " poor air

quality " March 10, prompting the board of directors to order the

tests, a news release said Friday. The results were made available

recently.

" Thanks to our colleagues in Shelburne, Halifax and Bridgewater, we

have found space for all our animal friends, " Brezet,

Yarmouth SPCA president, said in the release. " We are indeed

grateful for their quick response to our request for help. "

Three other shelters have volunteered to provide space for animals.

The Yarmouth shelter officially closed at the beginning of this

month.

" Apart from our animal friends, our primary concern has been for the

health of the humans who work in our shelter, " Mr. Brezet said in

the release.

He said the organization has been working with the occupational

health and safety branch of the provincial Labour Department since

last fall in an attempt to rectify the mould problem.

The release said the Yarmouth SPCA will completely renovate its

shelter this year and hopes to open its doors again " within the near

future. "
