The contracts were awarded during a special meeting of the board Tuesday night. The work includes the remediation of a mold problem at the Frances S. DeMasi and the L. Rice schools and safety upgrades at DeMasi and Marlton Middle schools. Crews are scheduled to begin the projects this summer, officials said. The board awarded a $3.71 million contract to D' Construction Co. Inc. of Evesham for the renovations and alterations at DeMasi on Evesboro-Medford Road and Rice on Crown Royal Parkway. This work includes roof replacement and new heating, venting, and air- conditioning (HVAC) systems. Falasca Mechanical Contractor Inc. of Vineland, Cumberland County, was awarded the $6.32 million contract for HVAC work needed to complete the project, according to a district press release. Structural steel will be supplied by Southern New Jersey Steel Company of Vineland for $288,882. The board also awarded a $199,800 contract for plumbing and drainage work to C.J. Schmidt & Sons Inc. of Pennsauken, Camden County. Electri-Tech Inc. of Weymouth Township in Atlantic County won the contract to supply and install fire detection and closed-circuit television system at the Marlton Middle School on Tomlinson Mill Road. The firm was awarded a contract worth $290,800. Electri-Tech also was awarded the electrical work contract for $748,800. District officials said the awarding of bids is a necessary first step for the extensive reconstruction projects that will begin this summer. Voters approved the project last September. The state School Construction Corp. has pledged $6.06 million to the project. With the state aid, the local share, or the amount to be raised by taxation, is $9.4 million. Mold was found at both schools in 2003. Work on Rice and Marlton Middle schools will be started and completed by the start of the 2006-07 school year. The DeMasi project, the most extensive of all the work, will not be finished until next summer. E-mail: DANIELLE CAMILLI
