Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 You didn't look bad before, Maggie - but what a change! Did you realize that this tiny you was in that body? And you definitely look tons more athletic. You need to put some of those similar poses side by side in one album! Great job! I'm also 5'6 " and currently around 165 but with a much bigger frame than you. My 18% BF was at 151 lbs. I don't think my hips (the actual bones themselves) would ever fit into a size 4! I think when I had my first child, who was 10 lbs 2oz and 23 " long, my hips spread out to make room for him and never really returned (LOL!). Anyhow - great job! I'm hoping to find my BFL groove again soon.... in WI in WI Confessions of a former lumpy, hiphugger-wearin' size 12 LOL--there's nothing like eating crow! It goes perfectly with my morning protein shake. After my mini-rant this past weekend about gals who shouldn't be wearing certain clothes, I went into my photo archives and noticed that just one year ago, I was *one of them*! :-o I think I was close to 150 lbs (and very much a fluffalump in my too-tight hiphuggers and little tops) when some of the photos were taken, and after comparing them to my current photos, I'm never letting myself get back to that state again. Some of those photos were the reason I started BFL; one always THINKS they look better than they really do, and then the photos come in from the store and " OMG! EEEEEK! Do my arms really look like that? And is that a ROLL above my beltline? I'm starting BFL tomorrow! " I can admit that I was just as guilty of wearing clothes better left to the trim and fit as any of the mall ratlings I saw this weekend, and have bravely posted photos of ALL of my fashion faux pas of last year in my blog album. Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 Misty- You are totally right, of course. I think size and comfort level with one's body are all relative. Obviously I wasn't shying away from the fitted clothing when I was 15 lbs heavier and 3 sizes larger than I am now! I might not have been toned or tiny last year, but I sure was working the tank tops anyway. I don't know if this makes any sense, but I still had the confidence and residual mental image of myself that I'd developed when I was a full-time, physically-fit Army girl, even though I'd leaped off the fitness wagon into a vat of workplace candy and pizza. I wore those clothes last year, and I felt darn good doing it, but in my own self-perception, I looked a lot better in them than I actually did, objectively speaking. :: grins :: The camera's eye is a lot less forgiving than our own. I was fluffy as a teenager and in college, fit in the Army, then fluffy again when I got out to go back to school and work full-time. My perceptions of what are an acceptable level of fitness and body fat for my own body are colored by my four years in military service, when it was part of my duty to stay in shape and maintain a healthy weight and body fat, and overweight civilians were looked upon with a mixture of pity and disdain. I know, I know--it's a horrible attitude to have, but the military mindset doesn't leave a lot of room for warm, fuzzy group hugs. I'm still trying to shake off some of the brainwashing after 4 years out of the service. Anyway, looking at my " before " photos and in the mirror this year, I realized that I was no longer within my *own* tolerance levels, no matter what other people thought. I don't know if any of you have seen the Mel space movie spoof, " Spaceballs, " but I felt just like the President character when he was beamed aboard the spaceship with his head on backwards so he could look down and see his own backside for the first time. " Why didn't anyone tell me my *** was this big? " I was basically annoyed with myself for expanding into size 12s and pushing at the boundaries of 14 in jeans, so I channeled that anger into getting through the hideous BFL HIIT runs. Even now, I'm still not quite where I want to be, but I'm getting there a little bit at a time, and just like you, I'm not going to deprive myself of fun clothing along the way until I get there! You are coming from the other end of the spectrum, and you totally deserve to work the hiphuggers and trendy tops after all you've managed to accomplish (with 4 kids, no less, wow...)! Going from a size 20 to a size 12 is a fantastic achievement! Congratulations on your success so far, and please do continue to wear whatever the heck you want. You've certainly earned the right! Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 , I *wish* I could be 18% body fat at 151 lbs. I could have quit before I started. The BMI scale for Asians counts a BMI of 23 as overweight because of the smaller average frame sizes of most Asians. So, at 5'6 " and 150 lbs last year, I was technically overweight with a BMI of 24.2. And honestly, I had no idea how far BFL could take me. I've never been smaller than a 9/10 in pants, even when I was in high school or doing Army PT 5 days a week. When you spend all of your adult life in properly-fitting size 12 jeans, it really doesn't occur to you that a size 4 is possible. I sometimes catch a reflection of myself in a mirror and am reminded of my younger sister who has always been slender (she's 5'6 " also, but her weight range is 120-125 lbs). It's a very odd sensation, like the person in the mirror isn't really me! I'm not going to place too much importance on the size thing, though, because *I* know that my measurements still stick me firmly in pattern size 10 no matter what the sneaky retail clothing stores try to say to pad my ego and make me buy more clothes. It's all about fit, not an arbitrarily assigned size value. I did splice together two pictures of myself in the same party top, one from June 2003 and one from last night. I think it pretty much illustrates why I wasn't happy with the way things were heading when I started BFL. http://maggiewang.com/photos/Before-and-After/floral_03_04 Maggie On Fri, 8 Oct 2004 08:34:56 -0500, Dupree <jenniferdupree@...> wrote: > You didn't look bad before, Maggie - but what a change! Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 Wow - thanks for splicing that! How cool! I swear the arms make it for me - you can tell a fit person from an un-fit person by the arm dents, and you definitely have them. BTW - I was in the army myself for awhile (6 years in the ARNG) and was in the absolute BEST shape of my life after I got through with AIT. The size I was then is the size I want to be. I know I was hovering around 150 (had to be taped at every single weigh-in), but I remember one of my tapings had me at 14% body fat. Woo Hoo! Anyone for basic training again? Did my best 2-mile run in 15:25, and the most pushups in 2 min was 54 - don't even consider the situps - I sucked at them. I've never been in that good shape since. whoa was me.... Just another goal! Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 -- I know exactly what you mean about AIT! After two months of basic training which probably took me to 20% body fat from a start of 30% or more, the additional 17 weeks of AIT completely buffed me out. I was the only female in my AIT class of 20, so I was always trying to keep up with the boys. I was LEAN back then. Of course, permanent duty station and junk food poofed me back out a little bit, but I never lost the underlying muscle. My runs were gawdawful--I think my fastest time back then was 17:45 or something like that, but I ALWAYS maxed out situps at 80 or 82 and my highest push-up total was 65 right before I got out. Not too shabby for a nerdy, chunky bookworm who could only do 9 push-ups and 20-odd sit-ups when she started basic. Would I do basic training again now? I just might. It sucked in many ways (oh so many), but it was incredibly empowering and yes, even fun, too. I would LOVE to do another confidence course. BFL transformations are pretty impressive, but the military figured out how to do it first. I think every graduating high school senior in America should be required to go through 2 months of basic training with no further obligation to the military after they finish. The ones who enjoy the lifestyle could opt to stay in afterwards, while the ones who don't care for it can just continue on to trade school, college, or the job market a little less cocky and a lot more fit than they would have otherwise. How many of us would have led much different lives if we'd started our adulthoods in good shape and without a know-it-all attitude about everything? Think about it... Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 There aren't any girl push-ups in the U.S. Army! We all had to do the real ones whether we were male or female. When I turned 22, my drill sergeant at AIT even made me do 10 push-ups for every year of my life right outside his office door. 220 of them. I could barely move my arms when my classmates took me out to dinner that night. I still refuse to do girlie push-ups to this day. Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 I'm sure she'll answer this, too, but so will I - always on your feet, never on your knees. And you have to break the plane on the way down, meaning you go at least to the point where your upper arms are parallel to the ground, if not a little lower. Oh - and your whole body has to stay flat as a board, too - no butts in the air. We worked hard at doing " correct " push-ups, can you tell? in WI Re: Confessions of a former lumpy, hiphugger-wearin' size 12 > my highest push-up total was 65 right > before I got out. Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 Wow. I'm thinking of working pushups into my workouts... along with with bench dips I do (I wanna be able to do real dips sometime) and pullups (i do the assisted ones now, with plenty of assistance...) I just think it would so cool to be able to do unassisted pullups!!!! -jo > There aren't any girl push-ups in the U.S. Army! > > We all had to do the real ones whether we were male or female.
