Derby celebrations are getting into full swing, but on a more

serious note is a celebration a family is experiencing today as one

member of their family leave the hospital. Bud was not

expected to live let alone walk, but we have his remarkable story.

You might think that a story about a man who has lost a large

portion of his leg to a flesh eating disease and some of his face to

a rare fungus would be hard to watch but I promise you it's not,

it's really more of an inspiration. It's the story of the miracle

man, Bud .

They said it was doubtful he would live. But if he did he would

likely loose his nose, both eyes, his palate, and most of his face.

Doctors told his daughter.

" He's never going to talk again...this the best...these types of

patients, " Diane Curtis says.

Today, 76-year-old Bud beat all odds as he prepared to walk

out of Frasier Rehab. Three months ago, Bud started complaining of

facial numbness and blurred vision. Only 500 people a year come down

with a fungal disease that kills all but one percent of its victims.

Bud was lucky it only took his sight.

" The scenery is not very good, " jokes.

Bud, who has been a pilot, an engineer, a plumber and a number of

other professions hasn't wasted any time during the past three

months recuperating at a hospital. He has been inventing ways to

cope with his lack of sight.

" He is the most amazing person I have ever met, " Diane Curtis says.

The flesh-eating disease has a 30 percent fatality rate. The disease

can be fatal in as little as 12 to 24 hours.

Bud and his wife live over 100 miles from Louisville on two acres of

land in a 17-room house. They say they have no plans to move. They

want to continue to live the way they did before the miracle man got

sick.
