Expert opinion to be sought on court mold

The Forrest County Board Of Supervisors met Monday for the first

time since learning that the offices of the circuit clerk, district

attorney, and circuit judge contain a potentially harmful amount of

mold.

The mold problem in the Forrest County Courthouse is obviously a

concern to those who work there. District Attorney Jon Mark

Weathers, Judge Bob Helfrich, and Circuit Clerk Lou Ellen all

attended the meeting to see how the board plans on cleaning up the

mess.

Board President Hudson said the board is now faced with mold

cleanup, building renovations, and possible relocation of staff.

Building maintenance director Curtis Elliot says the next step is to

bring in a certified cleanup team for a recommendation.

" We don't know the extent of it because the vinyl wallpaper in the

building covers about 95 percent of the total building, and until we

start pulling the paper back we won't know the extent of the growth

and how far it has spread, " he said.

One of the theories is that moisture intrusion happens at the

century-old courthouse because back in the 1980s the building was

sandblasted to improve its appearance. As a result the the

protective coating on the brick was removed, leaving it porous.

Elliot says the brick was sealed about five years ago, but

apparently that didn't do the trick. Hurricane Katrina " made it a

lot worse because we shut down the air conditioner and the heat and

the moisture grew the mold. "

Which means FEMA may help with the cost.

Officials say they're apprehensive about what they'll find when they

check other Forrest County buildings.
