The Grand Haven Area Board of Education Wednesday approved bids

totaling $246,814 for the cleanup of mold at Ferry Elementary School

on the city's east side.

Students at the school have attended classes in the vacant

Ferrysburg Elementary School building this winter and spring because

mold was discovered in the Ferry building.

Ferry school, after a large-scale cleanup and repair, will be ready

again for students in the fall, school officials said. The

Ferrysburg school building has been sold to Ferrysburg, which plans

to convert it to a community center and city hall once the school

district no longer needs it for students.

The board awarded the bid for mold abatement and demolition of

damaged materials to Pro Tech Environmental of for $29,295.

The masonry work was awarded to Burggrabe Masonry of Belding, which

bid $88,640.

Other bids awarded included:

Vos Glass of Grand Rapids, $57,950 to replace windows;

Central Ceiling and Partition of Midland, $55,950 to do ceiling

work;

Painting Services Inc. of West Michigan, $9,000 for painting;

C.J.'s Coatings and Sealants of Hudsonville, $5,979 for sealing

materials.

District workers have ripped out insulation and done other

preliminary work to reduce the cost of removing the mold, said Don

Rescorla, director of operations.

The school board also awarded work to clean floors, prepare them for

coverings and install carpet where needed to River City Flooring of

Hudsonville. The company submitted the low bid of $73,900.

Superintendent Konarska said estimated the total cost of the

cleanup and remodeling at $600,000. The district had estimated the

cost to be about $650,000.

School officials said every effort has been made to award the work

to local or West Michigan companies, where possible.

The Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. of Grand Rapids is managing the project.
