Hi Anya,

Are you and others interested in Kedwa Attar or the essential oil

(Ruh Kedwa)? I have a source for a lovely Kedwa Attar (btw), 2 of my

Indian contacts write it as Kewra, but its the same thing.

I have a source for the Ruh Kedwa but the aroma is so very fleeting

that I do not know how useful it would be??? And it is very expensive!

The Attar lasts longer as it is in a Sandalwood base which helps to

hold it. I like the idea of the Ruh Kedwa better, but in practice I

think the Kedwa Attar is the way to go.

It's also called Keora, Will, and several other names, but we've hit the

most common ones.

Yes, quite expensive. That's what I'm using. It will actually evaporate so

that you can see it if you leave the top off the bottle for several hours!

There is also an absolute I'm using, more long-lasting.

I'm avoiding any sandalwood-based product in my perfumes, due to

sustainability issues. It'll be years before we see what the real story is,

so I'm taking the attitude that I don't have to use it. I have a huge

stash of mitti attar that I will use, but that's it, won't buy anymore.

Ditto primo sandalwood. Just my stash and for bespoke perfumes. Last year I

went through hell on this group with some who were opposed to sandalwood,

ambergris, and at one point - get this - whether or not natural perfumery

should even exist because it depletes resources. Yet, they were using

sandalwood and attars. Just silly, really. If they had seen your recent

slip up on ambergris, they'd have had your head, guaranteed! Mine, too, for

allowing discussion of it. Thank goodness they're all gone, but the bitter

taste lingers on. I fear if they caught wind I was thinking of using an

attar they'd attack me on a blog somewhere. Such is restraint of trade and

artistry.

I do miss not using sandalwood in any of my blends, but I know you'll

understand. In the meantime I'm just being creative and pretending

sandalwood never existed (yeah, right, I love the stuff!)

Hi Anya,

I think I will look for the Kedwa absolute. I can't seem to get

enthused about an essential oil that disappears to the ethers as fast

as the Kedwa does, and is super expensive. I like that you mention

that the Kedwa absolute is more long-lasting.

I also understand your concern for sandalwood oil based attars. If

they are used wisely in small amounts I do not see too much harm in

using the attars. It is better than using the sw oil by itself and in

large quantities. However, perhaps a better solution would be for the

attars to be made in a different base than sandalwood. Perhaps

cedarwood, frankincense or something like that... depending on the

other essence that it will be distilled into.

Hi will

If you smelled it, you'd get enthused! It's glorious, and irreplaceable in

certain instances. Obviously, I adore the stuff. My perfume references

Pandanus Lake at the Garden, so that flower is necessary. Yes, the

concrete (hard to get) and the absolute are much longer-lasting. In fact,

their rosy character can last 24 hours in some instances, you have to know

how to tease it out and glue it down ;-)

I don't have time to post all that is sent me, so sorry for the half-baked

questions. Tony Burfield and Chrissie Wildwood have great sites

http://chrissiewildwood.com and http://cropwatch.org and Tony's newsletters

are full of info, but hard to find on the website. I'm sure he sent me

something in the past month or so that repeated the dire

shortages/sustainability issues, but I can't find it now. If someone else

can, please post it.

Now Marcia, someone whom I respect for her breadth and depth of knowledge

on such matters, has posted that perhaps the boycott on sw can be lifted

(my words, not hers.)

Anything you can report on these issues would be appreciated.
