Re: I did my 1st treadmill

workout....HIIT

Anjil,

Am glad you enjoyed hearing about my folks... I can't help but smile when

thinking about them and bragging about them is hard not to do.....

Sounds like Country Dancing is in your future...*S*.....also romantic (in my

book anyways).......how can a waltz NOT be romantic????????

It was helpful for me to write down the fact that I have to keep my folks in

mind when working-out.... not just the scale... or the details about things....

how well or badly I feel I've done for the day.....but the general mindset of

doing what needs to be done in order to lead an active and healthy life for a

long long time.......so, I thank everyone's patience in allowing me the space to

do so.....

As for 'wanting' to do weights, etc.... I'm sort of in your boat right

now... I do it because it's what I MUST do.......

What I'm looking forward to is it simply being a habit; a part of my daily

routine.....

My folks make 'a day' of their workout days... over the years they've found

ways to make it 'fun'..... it's play time for them to some degree... (though, I

know that there are days when they would rather just hang out.....).....that

will be my NEXT step........

Thanks, again, for your lovely post..

Best for a wonderful weekend and the coming week.........

Diane

Hiya,

Thank you for sharing that story about your parents :) It was very

inspiring! And HOW romantic........Ballroom dancing............. I love country

dancing, I haven't been in ages, but there was one couple that was probaly in

their 70's, I used to love to watch. every waltz they were right up there doing

the 4 corners .

Yesterday my b/f said , " well thats right you like to lift weights " . And I

had to correct him. I said, " no no hun, I want to be thin, I want have more

endorance, i want to feel better, and I want to be firm and sexy.....I do not

want to lift weights. Lifting weights is simply one of the things I need to do

to get me what I really want " .

Have GREAT day, unless you have other plans

- One last comment.......

Anjil, you and I are the same age.

It's sometimes frustrating for me to know that I require such more 'gentle

care' and recuperation than I did in when I was 35, even.........

I used to think that my dad was crazy to do various stretching exercises

when he had no problems....... he always just smiled and said... " that's

right.... and if I keep up with this I WON'T have any more problems " .......

He and my mom are now 76. He's an ex Semi-Pro Football player with many

creaky limbs. He also was in a horrific car crash when I was young which

brought on a heart attack.......... and..... there are various other problems

both he and my mom have struggled with over the years....

........ so what's the point to my rambling?..... they are the most amazing

people ever...

They made a point when I hit HS and my Sis Jr High to do things for

themselves because they knew they didn't have to babysit us every minute of the

day... so they took up ball-room dancing........ (they're pretty good at it I

might add... have one a few of the smaller competitions....and been asked to do

exhibitions as well........*S*..).......

They decided to move south after we'd left home so they could be more active

year-round. (we're from New England).....

Since then things caught up with them, but like I said.........they keep at

it daily..... have modified their diet to smaller meals (which I used to scoff

at, though my mom was always one for healthy snacks in between meals

anyways.....)...and they work out at the gymn three days a week with both cardio

and weight training.......

... and guess what..... what your parents told you was true!...........

they're energetic... look great.. and are healthier than most their

age.........they constantly get comments that they look much younger than they

are.......

That's one thing that keeps me chugging along here........ knowing that they

just do what they know they MUST at their age to be able to do what they WANT

has been humbling.........

.... because, right now, I'm in worse shape than they are.........

All the best to you on your journey.........and look forward to hearing how

things progress along.....

Thank you Diane,

yes, that was very helpful. I have a big ball I sit on and do stretches on.

It's great for the back etc. And for crunches.. when I get to that day

........heheh..... I am 44 and my creaky ole bones do need there warm up an cool

down ....... or I am in 'hell' for 4 or 5 days lol And I wont worry about where

I start, cuz i know it's 'progress not perfection' right. Thanks again.

diane beauregard <emaildb@...> wrote:

I haven't found any guidelines in BFL regarding stretching.

However, I USED to be fairly active when younger, so understood the need for

my body to have a warm-up and cool-down period (always have, probably always

will).....

Also, I have a major problem with sciatica...it put me out of commission at

week 2 of my first try, so had to re-group and focus a LOT on stretching.

I am happy to report that it's under control right now.

What I do for cardio is treadmill work. I don't stretch out first unless

I'm in pain. But, I start verrryyy slow.... at 2mph, then bump it up by .2

MPH... I do that for 6-10 minutes depending on how tight I am.

Then I start into the work out proper.

It took me a few tries to figure out what I could handle... and ended up

adjusting downwards like you did initially. I wouldn't worry about it.... I've

started to work myself up slowly ......and am confident that if I'm consistent

I'll reach my goals of not only where I THOUGHT my starting point would be, but

surpass it.....

For cool down I tend to reverse for another 10 minutes ........just take it

slow.... let my body sweat itself silly, drink water, and enjoy the fact that

I'm moving.......

After that, I start my back stretches/exercises.... they are focused on the

back, but do a great deal for the legs since everything's connected...

*S*....they're also very gentle..... if you'd like me to send you a description

just let me know.....

I also usually do some other neck/shoulder stretching as well. I find that

the post work-out stretching is a great way to 'enjoy' the feeling of a workout

completed, drink tons of water, and start to focus on the healing aspects of

what I've done/am doing.

It takes me an hour in total, but is very gratifying.

Oh... I do the same post work-out stretch routine after weights.......

also... I work out in the early evenings....... I know that's not 'by the

book', but it works out best for me because I'm so tight in the AM. I'll do a

stretching session before work if I feel that I'm more tight than what's become

'normal'....... I've found that's a great opportunity to get focused on the

day.... and I feel more energized/loose and willing to take on whatever

comes........

Hope that helps a bit.......

Best,

Diane

Hi everyone,

OMG ! ...........I did my 1st treadmill workout the BFL way. Some

of you may just die LOL, but thats ok..........I had to go up in

increments of .2 ......... I tried it at speed settings of 1,1,2,3,4

OK, right there, I almost FLEW off the machine.........It was WAAAY

to fast for me.......I stopped for 1 min while I reconfigured and

then it went like this 3,2,2.4,2.6,2.8,2,2.4,2.6,3,2,2.2,2.6,3,3.2,2

(these were with 1 min between each)

Now I am STARVING... anxiously drinking Water and waiting for the 1

hour to be up so I can EAT !

I did not take time to stretch before this and did not read anything

about stretching...... I did stretch after........and OMG my legs

BURNED.......yes at the speed of 3.2, I even fought back a

tear....ouch, ouch,ouch........So,when do any of you stretch ? I

used to walk for 5 min. , stretch for 5 min. then walk 1/2 hour etc.

and stretch again after ? I am not sure what to do with BFL ? Thanx

for any feedback :-)
