Q - nasal lavage in kids

Hi everyone. I'm looking for people's experience with nasal lavage in

youngsters. I am seeing a 5 year old girl tomorrow who suffers from seems

like pretty severe sinus infections. She's missing a lot of school and her

allopathic doctors have told her mother just to expect that she's going to

get these infections frequently and she will continue to miss a lot of

school.

I would like to suggest nasal lavage at least during this acute phase but

I'm not sure how that will go over in a 5 year old. What have people tried?

Thanks!

In children it can be difficult to do the nasal lavage because they are

not always compliant with the technique. I have been using a product

called Xlear (available from Emerson ecologics). It is a xylitol

solution that you spray into the nose. Xylitol has antibacterial

effects. It is great for sinus infections and also to prevent ear

infections. Children tolerate this better than the neti pot.

Kathy-

A clinical pearl I got from one of my NCNM shifts was a modified Neti

for kids. You put a dropperful of the saline solution in each nostril

while the child is lying supine on the bed. After 5 minutes, have the

child get up and gargle with the solution and spit it out. I've never

tried it, so I don't know how well it works. You could also start

with alternating hot and cold over the sinuses.

You could also consider adding Juglans and Ribes gemmos. I used these

with a patient with chronic sinusitis and there have been amazing

results. He's also been adding a pinch of HMF in the Neti pot along

with all the BTGs.

Kim and Pamela,

Thanks for your input re: nasal lavage in kids. I was thinking along the

lines of a spray bottle application rather than a neti pot too. I like the

eye dropper application while lying supine.

Who has used Gemmos with kids? Does the dose need to be adjusted? 25 drops

instead of 50 tid?

I actually can't " prescribe " any supplements yet b/c I am still waiting for

my AK license to come through but her mom wanted to meet and I thought I

could at least suggest some of our home therapies like warming sox, COPs,

alternating hot/cold and nasal lavage and also explain the philosophy and

paradigm from which we operate.

Thanks! -kms
