Guest guest
Hi Doug, Wow.. a man after my own heart! Steiner school, huh? Would that be what we call " Waldorf " here? I've been looking into that for Kelsey (almost 8 yo.) but the commute is just too far! I've also done some homeopathy (not necessarily successfully) and am using some nutritional therapy to help even out her moods and increase her concentration (which is *mostly* working). Anyway, it is true that many kids need SSRIs to manage the anxiety associated with the exposure and response (E & RP) method of cognitive behavioral therapy, which is the long term fix for OCD. But we are also an example of a family who made tremendous gains against OCD without medication. Kelsey had a very, very severe onset last Spring and was even homebound two weeks because she couldn't get dressed (contaminatd clothing) but with very intensive E & RP was 95% better in 10 weeks. I worked with her daily between weekly sessions with her therapist. It sounds as if you have a therapist at least willing to learn E & RP, which is of course, second choice to having someone very skilled in this method. But never fear—we'll be happy to help on this list. Have you reviewed some of the treatment guides available through the OCD Foundation to help you get a sense of the process? It's important to start very, very slowly to build your daughter's self-confidence. I'd be happy to share our early experience if you have specific questions. Take care, in San Diego P.S. What type of musician are you? My scientist husband spends his evenings with his guitar after kids are in bed. He calls it " his dark mistress " and I think I'm getting jealous! Guest guest
Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm going to have to get to work earlier to allow for the hour or so in front of the box! Yes, Steiner School is the same as Waldorf. It's a great system, and Lil loves school almost as much as horseriding, so it's gotta be good. Her homoeopathics are helping, we think, and she gets extra Vitamin B to make up for being a vegetarian, and a herbal tea called " Sleepytime " which I would heartily recommend for anyone having difficulty getting a kid off to sleep. It doesn't work miracles if they're very anxious, but it seems to take the edge off enough for her to relax. It just has a few different herbs (I can tell you which if anyone's interested); made by a mob called " Celestial Seasonings " - available from our Health Food store. I don't yet know if our new psych. is the right kind of guy, I'm still trying to find someone (anyone) with experience to assist with her therapy. I'm confident Steph and I can handle the home side but it seems from everything I've read and from this list that the " formal " sessions have an important role, too. More, please, about starting slowly - where do we start at all? Steph's all for leaping in on the most disturbing symptom - sleeptime ritual - I think we should start on one of the simpler things that is obviously silly eg. walking up stairs one at a time (bringing the other foot up next to the leading foot before taking the next step). What do you think? On another subject, Lil is having similar social problems to Lesli's andra. This morning she was busy writing out an apology to the girl that's been tormenting her in the code they used to use when they were best friends. When I asked her what she was apologising for, she said she didn't know if she'd actually done anything and that this was " just in case " . My heart sank at the thought of what the other girl might do, but, as you all say, she's got to do her own thing and learn from the consequences. And, you never know, it's just crazy enough to work. Thanks and bye for now. PS I'm a drummer, not a real musician! I was in San Diego a couple of times - great town. I remember those weird power station dome thingys on the road down from LA. Don't get jealous of a guitar, unless he starts taking it away for weekends (without you). -- Cheers, Doug in Oz Doug Falconer PO Box 257 Castlemaine Vic 3450 Australia dougf@... > From: Roman <chrisroman@...> > Organization: Roman Ink > Reply-onelist > Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2000 10:31:16 -0700 > onelist > Subject: Re: Welcome Doug > > From: Roman <chrisroman@...> > > Hi Doug, > > Wow.. a man after my own heart! Guest guest
I'm glad you could join us and we will be looking forward to any information you can provide. For those of you who don't know Doug I've been in touch with him for about 6 years and one of the first professionals that I had come across during my worst times, who would give me honest answers. I may not have liked many of his answers but I believed he was speaking he was speaking the truth and he has always been a powerful advocate and environmental researcher, for those who have suffered from exposure to pathogenic microfungi. At that time when Sharon was suffering the worst and I was unaware of what I was dealing with, I do honestly believe that he had not only saved my wife but also myself. I'm sure Doug would not mind, but I have posted his bio below so you can see what he has been doing over the last several years. I just want to clairify one thing here in his bio, Doug was involved in many conferences across the country and the name of it was " Mold Across America. " There is not connection whatsoever to moldacrossamerica.org, this is where the name came from. KC R. Haney Environmental Health Researcher, Consultant, Author R. Haney holds a Science degree in Criminology from Rio Hondo College, Whittier, CA., and holds a Psychology degree from Chapman University. He is President of EnviroHealth Research & Consulting in Rocklin, CA. He is founder of The Environmental Health Research Group, a Sacramento-based environmental health data research/program development company. His experience spans over 18 years in technology/science research writing and program development reflecting federally funded programs, e.g., the Decade of the Brain, Human Genome Project, and Human Immune System. Mr. Haney will graduate from Chapman University in March 2005 with a BA in Psychology (Molecular/Environmental Psychology). His thesis, " Microbial Influences in Alcoholism: A Qualitative Study " received widespread praise at the university where he has introduced " Environmental Health Psychology " as a concept of Molecular Psychology, wherein metabolic activities of microbial and environmental stimuli integrate with human cells to influence health (mental/medical) and perceptual behavior in animals and humans. Expert Witness Mr. Haney is currently involved as an expert witness in several mold exposure health-related litigation matters, and has submitted position papers as an expert for federal circuit court systems in Georgia and Arizona. He previously served as an environmental health consultant to attorneys for two mold exposure-related death cases in Houston, TX and Fresno, CA. Mr. Haney is considered by many health experts as the foremost environmental health research authority in the country with the ability to present clearly both the medical and ecological aspects of indoor microfungi exposures and their adverse health affects. His presentations are widely acclaimed for their accuracy, high level of content and comprehensiveness. He offers his clear and precise oratorical delivery in a manner that is easily understood by all audiences. During May through July 2002, Mr. Haney participated in Mold Across America culminating with a televised interview with Dr. Claud Young, M.D. (Orthopedic Surgeon) and Chairman of the Southern Baptist Leadership Conference in Detroit, MI on ComCast public television. Mr. Haney is an expert consultant in litigation matters involving environmental microfungi exposures and human disease ( " medical causation " ) having consulted to attorneys litigating three mold-related death cases and numerous Personal Injury matters. He has consulted on the United States Toxic Mold Safety and Protection Act ( " Melina Bill, " HR 1268) with the staff of U.S. Congressman Conyers, Jr. (D-Detroit), who introduced the bill into the U.S. Congress.
