Guest guest
Employees Still Fighting To Be Moved From Moldy Building POSTED: 7:42 pm CST March 6, 2006 UPDATED: 7:59 pm CST March 6, 2006 http://www.nbc13.com/news/7758501/detail.html BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Some Birmingham police officers suspect the building they're working in is making them sick. Recently, the officers were issued special masks, but they claim they have worked in these conditions for years. Mold can be seen growing on the walls, in the ceiling and other areas of the Birmingham Police Department's Forensic Building on Sixth Avenue. Last spring, city officials announced they would move the 14 employees to police headquarters. A year later, they still remain in the moldy building. A deputy chief said he has no proof that the Forensic Building is causing respiratory problems for the employees who work there. But the officers who work there said they've never felt worse in their careers. Officers said that every time it rains, the ceiling leaks and the moisture is a breeding ground for mold. They are convinced that the mold and birds and rodents that sneak into the open spaces are causing health problems. Chief Todd said the officers will be moved within 90 days. The Fraternal Order of Police president said he will appeal to the Birmingham City Council to speed up the process. Have a comment about this story? E-mail us at morenews@...
