Amy,

If the vertebrae has not fully formed, it would also be considered a structural type scoliosis. Structural scoliosis is always progressive, so please keep a very close eye on him. The progression would be most obvious during his growth spurts.

Did the doc give you any measurements?

Whats the docs plan if/when it progresses?

How old is your babe again?

thanks,

Hi,Shellie here,

I would get a second opinion. I don't remember how old you said Robbie is. A vertebrae with part missing could be a hemivertebrae and could seriously increase the kyphosis as he grows driving the spine in the wrong direction. I would get someone elses opinion on it before watching awhile. If he is young (under two) he will grow rapidly and so may his curve. H. stated that Deshea's son had a hemi removed and he is due to begin serial corrective plaster casts with a very great prognosis. Just a suggestion.

I took Robbie to the orthopedic surgeon for his MRI follow-up today. He said that technically Robbie has postural kyphosis, not scoliosis. Basically, one of his vertebrates (he showed me where on the x-ray) did not fully form. So it's not stacked right like the others and results in the bony "bump." He said it's very mild and thinks that as Robbie grows and his back muscles get stronger, it'll align itself ok. He also says it looks like there's a chance that the rest of the bone is there, just not mineralized (hardened?) yet. So, we have to go back in 6 months for another x-ray to make sure it's not getting further out of whack, but I should call sooner if I notice any obvious progression or other concerning things. If you don't mind, I'll still lurk here for a while and pray for good things for your

The doc didn't give any measurements. But I didn't ask b/c the peds

office had told me after the x-ray that it was 15 degrees. He said he

was encouraged that Robbie has flexibility, not stiffness in the

spine and that when the doc held him up (like in a back bend), the

curve actually straightened out. (I think that's what he said -- wish

I'd brought a tape recorder w/me.) He also said it's encouraging that

the kyphosis can really only be seen when Robbie is sitting.

The doc said if there is progression, we'd probably move to a brace.

I didnt' ask him what would constitute enough progression. I think I

may call the office back for measurements and to find out what they

would consider progression.

Shellie,

Thanks for the input. Robbie is 17 months old. What exactly is a

hemivertebrae? The doc did say that he thought the rest of the bone

might be there, but it wasn't mineralized yet. Wonder if that means

that it may fill in and harden later? I may look into who around here

would be good for a second opinion. Thanks!
