Guest guest
Tanitas tend to be a little flaky and read 7-8% high. They're easy to use and good for spotting a downward trend, just brace yourself and don't burst into tears when you first see your body fat percentage. That's been my main experience with them, people coming here hysterical after an absurdly high reading. :-) Maybe somebody else knows about the finer points. body fat scales? Does anyone use a body fat scale? Which ones seem to be the most accurate? Tanita seems to be the best from what I've heard...but which model? Guest guest
I have a Tanita that I bought for my husband's Christmas 2002 present. It consistently read approximately 5-7% higher than my actual bodyfat, depending on my level of hydration. At the end of Challenge 1, it read my bodyfat around 30%. I have a picture posted under the folder Challenge 2 and you can tell me if you think it reads inaccurately. The day I started the challenge (the first pictures in the folder), it read my bodyfat as 34.8%. On the day my After picture was taken, it said my bodyfat was 29.4%. I had caliper readings done at the gym by a trainer and he came out with 24% that very same day, an hour later. I don't rely on my Tanita to tell me the accurate bodyfat, but rather use it as a progression measurement. When I bought that scale in 2002, my bodyfat read 39% on it. I am hovering around 32-33% on it as of today. They are a great, albeit expensive, way to measure your weight and bodyfat loss. If I had known how inaccurate it was, I may not have bought it. I believe I paid $120 and it's one of the higher end Tanitas. I bought it online for about $30 cheaper than in the store, even after shipping and handling. Try Ebay....there are great deals on there and you don't have to pay sales tax. M. ztakpsi@... wrote: Does anyone use a body fat scale? Which ones seem to be the most accurate? Guest guest
I find it very difficult to believe what the Tanita Scales show. If I set mine to " adult " mode, at 5'7 " and 150 lbs I show 36% BF. If I set it to " athlete " mode I'm around 20%. If I use the accu-measure calipers it looks like about 22%. I'm concluding that the scales are just not reliable as an overall measure of body fat. Good idea that doesn't work so well....
