RE: Dumbbell Bench

Several strings have been going on this list I believe concerning the Bench

Press and how useful it is in both training for American football and how

accurate it is in evaluating the players capability. Two questions:

1.) How effective would the dumbbell bench or dumbbell incline bench be in

training and evaluating football players?

2.) Has anyone completed a study or heard of a study as to how strength in

the dumbbell benchpress correlates to strength in the barbell bench press.

(An old rule of thumb used to be something like 10 reps with 150# Db equaled

a 500# bench press).

At my best I could do 3 sets of 10 DB press with #150's and my best bench

was 462.

The chief complaint aimed at the bench press has been that football

players don't push other players while lying supine on a bench. In

that respect, the dumbbell and barbell variations are the same.

The rule of thumb I've heard is that your dumbbell bench (total

weight of both bells) should be 80% of your barbell bench. Thus, 10

reps with 150-lb dumbbells would roughly equal 10 reps with a 375-lb

barbell or a single rep with more like 475 lbs.

Of course, if you're a competitive powerlifter, your skill with the

barbell (and lack of skill with the dumbbells) could mean that those

10 reps with 150-lb dumbbells map to a single with a 500-lb barbell.

A bodybuilder whose been using dumbbells extensively might only

manage 400 lbs (or whatever) with the same dumbbell performance.
