It's almost exactly what Alvin just said (be sure you know exactly who raises

your food

before you pay a premium), but it's a good expose on WHOLE FOODS and other

purveyors

of the newest wrinkle in eating: " BIG ORGANIC " .

QUOTE: " Organic isn't necessarily " local " and neither " organic " nor " local " is

necessarily

" sustainable " .

The book quotes MICHAEL POLLAN, particularly his new book " The Omnivore's

Dilemma " ,

quotes ERIC SCHLOSSER, SIR ALBERT HOWARD, and many other experts in the ever-

evolving field. Organic products are exploding on the marketplace, increasing

20% a year

for the last 5 years, and hit $15 billion in 2004.

Read about MALL-WARTS big footprint in the battle to capture the mood of the

nation to

eat better, read about EARTHBOUND FARM which alone raises 70% of the organic

lettuce in

Americal, read about CASCADIAN FARMS which got so big Welch bought it and then

sold it

to General Mills. Whole Food (jokingly referred to as " Whole Paycheck " ) is now

the fastest-

growing mass retailer in the US

This is one of the best articles I've read for people who want to buy real

organic.

Is there a link for this? I went to the New Yorker website and could

not find it. The previous poster mentioned the NYT.

Thanks,

" I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon.

I seek opportunity to develop whatever talents God gave me - not

security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by

having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk;

to dream and to build, to fail and succeed. I refuse to barter

incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the

guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of

utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficience nor my dignity for

a handout. I will never cower before any earthly master nor bend to

any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to

think and act myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face

the world boldly and say - 'This, with God's help, I have done.' All

this is what it means to be an American. " -Dean Alfange
