Some fruits are higher on the GI scale than others. For example, out of 100, 1 sunkist orange has a GI of 48 while a pineapple can be of 68, watermelon of 80 and an apple of 40. You should look at both Glycemic Index and Glycemic load.. glycemic load measures the total response to a food. Check out http://www.glycemicindex.com , this site has a whole bunch of info on glycemic index/load and how they work. It also has a database of products you can check data on if you want. I know you love cheese so you may want to put " cheese " into their GI database and see the outcome of the glycemic load
Guest guest
Here's the other site: http://diabetes.about.com/library/mendosagi/ngilists.htm Glycemic index has nothing to do with calories. All it means is how fast the particular food enters your bloodstream and how high it spikes your insulin output. Don't worry about fruit. All you have to do is be conscious of your portion size. An inch thick or so slice of watermelon is fine just don't eat a quarter of a watermelon. Ditto the pineapple. White bread, potatoes, and white rice have a higher GI than a spoonful of table sugar. Interesting eh? Guest guest
I have a book that talks about the Glycemic Load being as big a factor as the Glycemic Index. I find that I check the Load before the Index because the Load takes in to account what you'd actually eat at a time. While foods like watermelon and carrots can contain a high level of sugar, they don't when you take in to consideration the amount you consume in a serving. The book I have is The New Glucose Revolution. Type either term in google and you can find lots of good info online. I would have never thought about the GL of a food till reading the book. Stasia and all the glycemic stuff..need help again Okay..can I be a freak for a second? okay..great... Stasia..you were saying fruit won't make you fat. but the glycemic book I have been following says I can't eat pineapple or watermelon till I reach my goal. I was wondering if you can post that glycemic index you use? I would just like to grab any fruit I can you know. and here is another question. sooo..what I am thinking is the higher the glycemic index of a food the higher the calories? is that true or not nessacarily? probably not when like you look at beans and oatmeal which are low glycemic but higher in cals. how much does the glycemic index matter..more than cals in cals out? so maybe what I am doing..the results I have are from cals in and out..maybe not really the low glycemic stuff..or is it both? am I making any sense at all? cause I stopped eating bananas and pineapple and watermelon thinking they will make me fat cause the book I follow says not to eat it. but..maybe it is not such a great book to follow. I know I have talked about this before but I cannot remember. which glycemic index is right? I know I have asked this before! I am really sorry to repeat..but my head forgets. thank you so much for helping me!
