IF your child is nursing, there is a good chance he will not catch them.

Mine didn't when he was nursing at 18 months.

Therese,

My son was 18 months old when he got the pox. He was a trooper. It did not

seem to bother him at all. No complications. Just keep him well hydrated.

Therese,

My two younger children were each nursing when exposed to the chicken pox.

My daughter was 6 months old, my son was about 8 months old (each was exposed

when the next older child was about 4 or so). Each got a few spots, but

they weren't at all sick.

I used to worry that they each didn't get enough of a case to really develop

immunity. But each has been exposed multiple times as children and young

adults and neither has had a case.

So exposing a nursling of any age is a good idea, if you have had the

chicken pox yourself.

I agree with Kimi--the older the person is, the harder they often get the

" childhood " ailments. So if you've got access to the virus, go for it.

And lay in a supply of Rhus tox 30C homeopathic remedy and calendula gel,

stingstop gel and lots of books and story tapes.

One of the neighborhood girls got them first and then all us moms went over

for coffee and to let the kids " play " . So when all the rest broke out, they

all were able to still play. So they were much happier than they would have

been if they had to stay away from their friends.

I sure with more parents would do this instead of vaccinating their

children!

beth, Shari, & Ann Marie,

Thanks for your responses. Unfortunately, my 15 month old weaned himself a

while ago. So he is NOT nursing.

Nor is my 2 1/2 yr old. Should I wait to expose them both, til they're a

little older? Any opinions?

HI Therese

I have heard the best time to expose kids to chicken pox is between

ages 5-8 when their immune systems are more developed, stronger and

better able to process the virus with less complications. Also, I

have heard that a lot of people find that their younger children

don't contract them as easily/quickly or worse, they only exhibit

partial symptomolgy and risk not becoming fully innoculated

after the manifestation. In other words, they may

contract the same virus years later (yuck!).

As far as nurslings go I have also heard that if your kid is exposed

and contracts chicken pox, they may have a less severe case since

she/he is nursing. But that's not neccesarily a good thing, as they

might not be fully innoculated. But if the nursing mom has had

chicken pox then she is still carrying some transplacental immunity

and the child might not get them.

Also, because your body is SO smart, if YOU (the nursing mama) are

exposed to the virus your body (breasts) will produce 2

immunoglobulins that will send antibodies straight from your

breastmilk to your nursing child that will prevent her from

contracting it (as your body does with all virus' it is exposed

to).

This information is from a woman who teaches classes on vaccines.

She responded to an email I sent out in the Houston area looking for

chicken pox for Abby.

I have now decided to wait to expose her. All that being said, I got

the chicken pox when I was less than 6 months old and am fine.

HTH,

We used oatmeal baths to sooth our kids. Just grind the oatmeal really fine and

add a cup or two to the coolish warm bath. You can add some baking soda too.
