Zinc / Stims / Etc. (Pat)

Pat,

Kirkman's zinc capsules are pretty small so maybe Karac could swallow

those. I copied this from the Kirkman website: " Zinc is essential

for normal skin, vision, smell, taste, reproduction and for protein

synthesis and wound healing. It is also one of the most important

factors in a healthy immune system, as well as being essential to

normal brain development. "

You asked how does stim. Well, probably the worse one for me

is the one I described in my " Stimming Out of Control " msg. about a

week or so ago. He also LOVES music/singing, but of course only the

ones HE likes and is in the mood for. He loves the keyboard in his

room that plays back music when you " push certain buttons. " He loves

pushing buttons. He also loves his CDs that his teacher makes for

all the children in the class of the songs they do there. I believe

these are also stims b/c he will play songs over and over and over

again. He also doesn't always let one song play through. He'll

press the " reverse " or " stop/restart " button on the CD player or

keyboard to listen to that song to a certain point then he'll play it

again. He also stims while listening to his music with his hand

moving in his face, etc. He's been in his own world really bad for

the last few weeks with wanting to be with me/family here and there.

I'm glad Karac is getting over the poison ivy and he didn't have to

get the shot! Sounds like he really had fun with the fire alarm

incident!! LOL

Oh, Karac set off the fire alarm at school today. He had a blast.

They had to wait outside for 45 minutes and the fire truck came. He

thought that was very exciting. I just hope he doesn't decide to do

it again! I don't think he realized what he was doing when he pulled

the lever.

Tammy, I think is pretty smart to know how to stop and start the music to play just what he wants to hear over and over again. Sometimes I would like to do the same thing. I'm about to decide that I am ADD. There was a test in the Dallas Morning News to take for adult ADD. I answered yes to four of the questions which qualifies me. LOL. Dr. Lovaas says we all stim and that unless we can replace the stimming with something more acceptable to just let it alone. Karac use to spin; so we got him a sit and spin; he no longer spins. He use to rock; so we got him a rocking chair; so he mostly rocks in the rocking chair. He use to scream; that just stopped on its own. He primarily verbal stims now, particularly when he is not mentally engaged, and I just say, "Karac, sing, talk, or be quiet." That usually works.

I remember you writing about 's stimming on the floor; I think I read someone's response that he might just be needing some pressure. You know Temple Grandin made sort of a hug machine for herself to get in when she needed some pressure. Karac has a great big heavy teddy bear that he puts on top of himself sometimes. My guess is it is for that very need. Anyway, enjoy . Sometimes I wish I had enjoyed Karac more and worried about his stims less. LOL, Pat K
