Guest guest
For most veggies, 8 inches is deep enough. One foot is fine, 18 inches is great. Top soil has lots of names. However, I'm going to tell you to pass on top soil, unless it has been sterilized. You get top soil and you get weed seeds, pathogens and whatever else. Use Mel's mix. Mel of square foot garden. One third compost, one third peat and one third coarse vermiculite. This is a little expensive going in, but all your need before you plant again is more compost. If you make your own compost, all the better. ew garden Date: Thu, 21 May 2009 18:21:02 -0000 Hey EW, Can you settle a debate between my husband and me? We are getting a late start getting the vegetable garden in (we live in mid-Michigan) and we need to re-do some of the boxes. We are going to make them deeper and he thinks topsoil is fine and I say we need compost. Any thoughts? Thanks, Info you may need to know... We use the square foot method. Our current boxed which are rotting are 4 inches deep and we'd like to try to get something 8 inched deep. And finally, no matter how hard I try I get lackluster results. I blame it on the topsoil he insists on buying, he blames it on my brown thumb. Thanks for your time. Home grown tomatoes: the ultimate taste of summer -- Be Yourself @ mail.com!
