From my knowledge, a side effect of the

drastic weight loss is hair loss. Typically people who already have thinning

hair experience the hair loss. I was informed that protein is crucial. She

needs to be eating more protein. If she is still losing weight, she should not

be alarmed of the hair loss. Once she stabilizes her hair should grow back. Nioxen

(sp?) is a recommended hair care product. Hope this helps.

skin, hair and nail problems

I could use anyone's help on this. I have a pt about 8

months from

surgery and is now complaining of her hair falling out, skin dry, scaly

and flaking, and ridges in her nails. She shared what foods and

supplements she typically ate and it did include 1 TB flaxseed oil, 1 TB

flaxseed, and 1 pkt fish oil (350 mg EPA and 230 mg DHA). Her diet is a

little low in protein (about 55 grams). Could this be EFA deficiency

even though she is taking supplements? Anyone else have experience with

this? Thanks in advance.

My experience is that biotin helps also but it only works well when gotten from eggs not as well from pills.

I also recommend to our pts that they consume 1 tsp soybean or canola oil

daily, in addition to omega 3 sources.

It sounds like her protein intake is too low. Did she have bypass or

banding surgery? I would have her increase her protein intake to at least

65 grams per day.
