typically it is only a concentrated sweet that causes the dumping reaction. Natural sugars do not seem to cause the dumping reaction, or if they do, it is not significant, thus if patients become hypoglycemic, a glass of milk or 100% juice should work nicely to bring the sugars up.

Hello,

I am interested in finding out what, if any, protocols are used for treating hypoglycemia post op gastric bypass. We have a surgeon who only wants to use D50 instead of an oral gel or glucose tabs. His concern is dumping syndrome which I understand, but if the blood glucose is low, would 15 grams of oral CHO cause a dumping syndrome? I would really appreciate the expertise of this group to explain this to me.

Thanks,

Nadine

This is a new surgeon and a new procedure for

the hospital. He has only done one

procedure so far. So at this point,

I think his objection is to the use of glucose gel across the board despite whether

the hypoglycemia is induced by medication or not.

Treating Hypoglycemia Post Op

Is the hypoglycemia with or without diabetes

medication?

Your team needs to think about the message

that you will give to patients for home treatment of hypoglycemia also.
