Guest guest
Katy, A simple (200 pages) book that explains the impact and solutions for dealing with ocd in a family is: OCD- New Help for the Family, by Hervert Gravitz. The cost is about $24us. I have met and corresponded with Dr. Gravitz, and considering the diversity of families, think that his book is a good general start. He recommends that families seek support from a therapist experienced in ocd situations to counsel the family. A co-operative story book for younger children is " Blink, Blink, Clop, Clop: Why Do We Do Things We Can't Stop? An OCD Storybook. By Moritz and Jablonsky. Cost is about $18. I also suggest that you look at the links and files on our site on egroups. I cant remember how many times we've been challenged on our parenting skills! We did courses so that we could access services - but after 2-3 weeks, the facilitators always told us: forget it, you know what your doing! Follow your instinct, and if necessary, set up boundaries. Katy, This is your child! take care and good luck with this one!! wendy in canada ========================================================== >Hi, I am the mother of a six year old girl with OCD. Guest guest
Hi Katy, I, too, have a six-year-old girl with OCD. We have been through the blame game and almost believed it until our daughter was diagnosed. I would recommend the Herb Gravitz book that suggested; you can get it in paperback, which is less expensive. There is also a book called " No-Fault Brain Disorders, " with a chapter on OCD that is very good for lay people. I'll try to locate the author's name - you can probably find it in your library and copy the OCD chapter to send to your mother-in-law. Also, if you join the OCFoundation, they send some good, explanatory literature, but it takes about six weeks.
