I always understood that only 500mg of calcium is absorbed by the body at one time, is this true?

I haven't heard of the increase, I am suggesting 500mg twice a day plus the intake from food.

Renata,

Yes it is my understanding as well that the body absorbs ~500mg at a

time however I was discussing the calcium ingestion as a total from

the day (total of the seperate intervals ~2-3 times per day)

how much are you providing to your patients? have you heard of this

increase to 2000mg/day calcium supplementation?

500 mg provdes maximum absorption. any dose higher than that decreases absorption rates. You mus take into account how much elemental calcium is in fact in each pill as well.

There is no need for 2000 mg/day. 1000 mg, which is what is recommended as the DRI, is what people should aim for. The DRI's are developed based on a bell curve, aren't they? Meaning, getting a little less than that should also be sufficient. Taking in 2000 mg/day can run the risk of kidney stones in susceptible people.

New calcuim requirements??

Hello all,Just wondering any of your thoughts on this. I was speaking to one of the bariatric surgeons I work with and she claims she spoke with another dietitian who reported that there was recent research indicating an increase in the calcium requirements for gastric bypass patients. we are currently giving ~1000-1500mg/day of calcium supplementation and this claim was an increase up to at least 2000mg/day (additional to the MVI). I haven't seen any new studies out on this. What are you all doing??thanks in advance, lia
