Guest guest
What where your first thoughs about soap... I was just thinking about somethings I did as a child and I remember playing in a vacant house in the city and in this house I came across a box of different very old hotel soaps. Wow some of the package designs and fragrances. I absolutely loved them! I was curious as to how they where made but to young to want to find out. Then as a young adult (20's) a lady had homemade soap balls in her bathroom and I asked how she made them. It seemed simple and so began my dig for how too make things from scratch on my own. Sam beat me to it by one because she already had found a book about soapmaking and that is how we got started...though we don't make soaps together anymore, and her soap making adventures are put on the back burner. What triggered you all to make things from scratch?
Guest guest
So you just.... Followed your nose? hehe Shaye Re: Soaps Hi Marie, My odyssey is not as romantic as yours. LOL. After returning from Italy I began a hunt for a particular scent from days gone by - a 60's-ish scent. I was just looking for the scent. After looking for names, scents, and products I stumbled into a soapmakers site. I was overwhelmed with ideas. I spent months researching, planning, playing with formulas, looking at 'stuff' in the wee hours of the mornings. Insomnia can be productive. Finally, I approached my wife about letting me order a few 'things.' When the stuff arrived it sat in the computer room for a few more months because I was hesistant to work with lye. It's funny, but I've probably been exposed to, inhaled, or had pumped into my system chemicals far worse than lye. One weekend I finally got up the courage to make soap. What a mess I made, but I *made* soap. It lathered well, felt good on the skin, and *I* made it. After that, I was hooked. I look back at the beginnings and see where I am now. Our last inventory showed, according to my wife, " enough junk to soap the world. " Harumph, isn't that what a basement is for? <giggle> .......and, to make things worse, I never did find the original scent I was looking for. But man, my nose has been stuck in some pretty awesome scents over the years. Guest guest
Im always curious as to what brings us on this track of wanting to make things from scratch ourselves. Gabby > > Very interesting question, Gabby! > > I didn't have any wonderful childhood discoveries, as you did. As an adult, though, I developed a love for gardening that extended to herbs and then to natural, herbal cosmetics. That, of course, led to soap! :-) What could be more fun? I still love gardening, too. > > Beth > www.soapandgarden.com > www.soapandgarden.blogspot.com > Be good to your skin! > > > > In a message dated 02/18/09 12:58:54 Eastern Standard Time, wakerens@... writes: > What triggered you all to make things from scratch? > > >
Guest guest
Gabby, It's the rush I get from knowing what's in the product. The creatively behind it. The feeling of oils, butters, clays, etc., between my fingers. The foaming of the bubbles. The creaminess of a cream. The aromas, the scents, the colors... the final Aah! moment. Empowerment! Yes, I can! A product that's better for me, my family and the environment. Plus it's not bad that I get a few extra bucks in my pocket, either. by Marisol in Brooklyn Salt Sea sprays press his hair Rolling down his back, I am the eye of his storm.
