I don't want to sound pessimistic, but GA state is years behind in what is related to services for special kids. You can go to the web site of Gwinnett Co, where Norcross is, and you'll find out that a great majority of the schools had not passed the standars of education achievement, and I'm talking about regular elem and middle schools, so guess what's left for special ed. So, if I were in your place, I'd really think it over. Sometimes money is not everything in life. .Villanueva's in GA <villanuevaohana@...> wrote:

I have heard that each region determines what services will be approved, not sure how true that is. I have received funding for the past 3 years and I am currently waiting for approval for this year's request. We use the funding mostly to pay for music lessons which falls under the recreational/alternative activities. Lani has been taking piano lessons for 3 years and it has helped her self esteem tremendously.

She may be the last kid to be picked in PE but in music class she is the friend everyone wants on their team.

Betsy - my husband will be retiring next may from the AF and we will be moving to Tucson. Any advice?

Hi,My name is Betsy and we live in AZ. My husband has a job transfer opportunity to Norcross, GA. Before we go further in the transfer process, we need to obtain some info about services available in Georgia for our 7 year old. He is severely autistic, non-verbal but has good receptive language. We also have an 8 year old gifted daughter who participates in soccer, hip hop dance and a mother/daughter activity group through the YMCA. Our questions are:What areas near Norcross are good areas? What school districts to try for or to avoid?Does the state provide respite or habilitation services?Any good behaviorial specialists, developmental psychs etc? Here's what we currently have that we are comparing to. We know it will be difficult to beat!120 hours habilitation / month (1:1 with a provider in the home)60 hours respite/month (babysitting)2 hours

1:1 speech in home per week1 hr 1:1 Occupational therapy in home per week4 hours of housecleaning (this was approved when my husband was fighting cancer and the state hasn't taken it away since he's only been in remission for 3 months. Please email me at betsy8626@...Thanks in advance for your help.Betsy__________________________________________________

I agree with everyone else, you will not find the same level of

services. Georgia is the worst, or second worst (flip flopping with

Alabama I think) in just about every thing pertaining to education.

If you are moving because of a job with more money, you may find you

are spending more than the pay increase, just to get anywhere close

to what you have now.

Good luck if you decide to do it, but I would not suggest it. If I

had a special needs kid, I'd head to New Jersey.

Betsy-

I just moved here from Phoenix and what they are telling you about Georgia is right on target. While I like living here, it is not all that great for anyone with a child with severe to moderate autism. Luckily my son is high functioning and on the verge of recovery, so it hasn't been so bad. We actually have an excellent classroom situation for him and it has worked out.

While a lot of people in AZ complain about the services, I always thought they were great and was very grateful for them.

Good luck with your decision and I sure miss the weather out there!

One more thought on the AZ system versus GA. I do find the schools better here compared to what we had in both sdale and Glendale (DeerValley). So it has been better here as far as that goes. I think AZ needs vast improvements in the special education arena. Now I know GA also has a long way to go, but it has been better than AZ. I sat in on quite a few classes around GA and was much more impressed than the classes I sat in all over Maricopa when I was searching there. I originally came from Virginia (Loudoun County) and the Special Ed there was excellent. Even had ABA in preschool.

I have to go against the grain here and say that Georgia is MUCH easier to gain services and quality programs than South Carolina.

We are relieved to be here, in Gwinnett County, where our son is given more service than we could get with an attorney in SC!

Hi Betsy,

I work in Norcross and my son is in the 3rd grade here in Gwinnett County.

It's true that GA schools in general rank low in the nation and that budget

cuts are making medical options more difficult. However, there are many

wonderful schools & teachers here that I believe will serve your needs very

well. ' diagnosis is CP and Autism PDD-NOS. He continues to make

great progress both in school and at home. I've found that by being well

informed and involved in the schools and community, I have always found a

great network of talented and helpful people available. I wish you and your

family the best and hope to welcome y'all to Georgia one day soon.

Like other states the state picks up the tab for all the services your child needs. The way it works in PA is, at least in Erie, PA, you go to a place called "Wrap Around Services" and they will give you all the infor. you need. They will probably do an eval. on your child, and see what services are needed. They will also work with you in the schools, and determine what they would need there. You can get ABA therapy, ST, etc. in the home, and working together you can figure out how many hrs. of therapy your child needs. Of course you have to fill out paper work for the state to get the free services. I think you also get assigned a case manager like Betsy was saying. The therapists, case worker, etc. and anyone else involved with your child's therapy (including parents) get together on a regular basis and discuss your child's progress, problems, goals, etc. Everyone works together on the same page with your child. This frustrates me here in Georgia, because my kids have so many different therapy programs, etc. and they all do separate things, and there is no coming together of everyone for your child. Anyhow... I am probably leaving things out regarding the PA services. We were looking into it this summer, because my husband almost had an opportunity to get a job in Erie, PA, where I am from. It didn't turn out, but maybe someday it will.

Thanks-

That's where I recieved my degree in Special Ed. I had the

opportunity to work and observe in a variety of public and private

schools, including public schools that were specifically designed for

children with autism, some were even ABA based. I worked for a family

getting ABA services through Lovaas up there and they had little to

no out of pocket expenses, everything is covered through the school

districts. I knew a couple of families who had moved to NJ for these

reasons.

I think that's true to some extent, but it's worse here because of

the way every ounty is SO different. There's very little consistancy

across school districts, except that none meet federal standards. The

worst part is the discrepency inside one district! I taught in Cobb,

which is thoeretically one of the better ones, and where Walton High

is ( the best high school in GA), but I was in West Cobb which was

underfunded and overcrowded. It all depends on the money I guess.

Welcome to the group!

You have come to a great place to vent and get support. Many of us talk about things here that we don't tell our spouses or family members. We know someone here will understand us.

Glad you are here with us.

-- New member

Hi everyone,

I'm and have just joined the group. To save a lot of

repetition I've added my details to the database.

It's great that there is a group like this for offering

understanding and support. Although I keep on going and try not to

let the never ending ailments get me down, sometimes I do feel the

need of encouragement and empathy from others who also suffer from

chronic pain and illness. My husband is great but I'm sure he must

get fed up with me not feeling 100% most of the time. Also, I don't

aways tell him everything because I feel it's too much for him, so I

internalize the worry and stress, which doesn't help me physically.

I look forward to getting to know you and hope I can be of help to

others too.

Take care,

Welcome to the group! I think that just being around people who know what you are going through helps a lot. It helps me, at least. This group is a bunch of amazing people who are just like me and you. Encouragement is a must with anyone who has illnesses, and you'll find plenty here! Feel free to vent frustrations and share joys. We are like a big family here, we all love and support one another. I'm sorry for the reason that you're here, but I'm glad to see you here, and I am looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi Glenn,

Your son is being casted at Childrens Hospital in Denver?? How many casts has he had?

What results have you had with the casting and also what age was he diagnosed?

Sorry for all of the questions.

Glenn.

We are patients of the Shriners in Salt Lake City, Utah and travel from California. Our Dr. actually keeps my son's cast on for 3 months at a time. We were origionally at 60 degrees and are currently at 23 degrees in our 3rd cast. Why do they change his cast that often? Does he have any other issues? Why does he get PT, does he have low muscle tone? I know I am asking alot of questions I am just trying to fully understand.

Crista,

He started Mid August in Denver. He is on the fourth (I think), they recast every other week, he has seen some progress(70 degrees to about 63 out of brace) but we are still looking at a couple more months. He was born with the curvature but not "diagnosed" until about 9 months. He has had a TLSO but we were told that his condition now required more time and constant application. When he plateau's with the procedure we will go back to the TLSO. We are not closing our options for Shriners or any other location. We are also seeking PT. He does receive some services through the school but we are looking for more. Thanks.cristab@... wrote:

Hi Glenn

I'm and, I think, am the only UK-based mum on

here. My daughter is 2 and is currently in her

second cast. She has them changed every 3 months. She

started with a curve of 62 degrees and is now at 36.

We have a check up soon to see if this one is holding.

has a GA to put her cast on as well.

Welcome to the group

She has done two visits to schools and stood up in front of over 300 kids and teachers and lifted up her shirt to show everyone how she can make her tummy go in and out hte tummy hole. I would love to see the photos of Bridget and . You can email me at bert.daz@... Jope to hear great news about 's next cast. When will that be?
