Cathy: Blood Draw - poss help for squeamish kids

Hi ,

We are currently doing a phlebotomy aba program to get our son

accustomed to blood draw procedure before we start on TD-DMPS because

there is such a lot of testing involved and last time we went he

freaked. We are just following a modified version of this one:

practitioners referral. We are following the min testing protocol but

it still means 7 tubes of blood - anyone any suggestions how to get

this amount from a normally compliant 8 year old who freaks as soon

as a needle is in sight - I think our only way forward is some form

of sedative - any suggestions???

Hi Mark,

Can't remember whether I thanked you or not for this info. We are currently working on the desensitisation in preparation for his blood draw noext week - we are making progress but I'm not certain he'll not freak when it gets to the real thing!!!

Hi ,

Weve got a Jack as well, 5yrs, I'm just going to book him in for week

after next. He's fine with it at home now - doesn't flinch when we

pretend to stick him and does the glug,glug noises as we pretend the

tube (filled with halloween blood) is filling up.

Hi Mark,

D Day is tomorrow!! Thanks for the blood advice - I couldn't get any halloween blood but a drop of red wine does just as well!! We're doing ok too with him managing to keep still for a count of 30 but when it comes to the real thing tomorrow I'm not so sure!! Will let you know and best of luck with your Jack!
