Can anyone give me some destructions on how to go about using it? I know you infuse it in oil.. But for a long time? Can I put it in the lye water? What can I do Thanks! Guest guest
Shaye, You can steep Alkanet Root powder in oil. I use 1 tablespoon per pound of oil, medium/light color. The longer you steep, the darker the color, up to a certain point. Or you could add more than a tablespoon to get an even darker color. You can cold steep the oil, just add powder, stir, and wait a day or two. Or you can warm the oil ever so slightly, don’t toast the powder in the oil. It will be ruined and smell bad. Ask me how I know, LOL! Then you will have to filter it through a coffee filter, which is what I use, to remove the residual powder because it can be very scratching if you leave it in the CP, lotions, lip balms, etc. I leave a little in if I want to make an exfoliating soap. Once you have your oil, you can use it to color just about any product. It does have a mild smell on it's own, so the more powder you use to get a darker color, the stronger the smell, so keep that in mind if you plan on making lotions, etc., without scent. Also, it does not hold up well in sunlight. The sunlight will bleach the color out, so your products have to be protected if you're doing a fair, etc. Also, in time the nature color diminishes on it’s own and you'll wind up with an tawny, somewhat mellow orange color, not the pretty rose, purple, maroon it makes at the beginning. If you want to make CP soap, you can just add the powder to the lye solution. It will turn anywhere from purple to true blue depending on how alkaline your solution is. I have only gotten blue once and then in after curing it turned a dull, washed out purple. If you get purple in the beginning it will stay a nice purple. You can also just add the steeped oil as a superfat oil and mix. What else? Um... Oh, it makes a mess if you get it on anything, put down lots of newspaper. It does stain and sometimes depending on what you get it on, it won't come out! I can’t remember more now. If you have other questions let me know. Marisol in Brooklyn PS: Oh, I just remembered, I’ve never used it in M & P. I have used it in lip balms, nice pretty pink, after a year, yucko color! Turns sooner in lotions, about three or so months to that mellow orange color. I think the products with water make it lose it color faster. I don't know if this is true, it just seems that way to me. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the color to stick?! Guest guest
This was my response to Shaye's question: Shaye, I don't infuse mine when making soap. I add about a teaspoon to a 1/2 ounce or so of avocado oil & stir. After I mix the lye water with the melted oils I take a cup or so & mix it with the colored oil for my swirls or layers. I make my soap in 3lb batches. Here's what it looks like layered: http://www.countrymeadowcreations.com/all-natural-lavrose-soap.htm Using more colorant makes the deep purple, if I use less it's more a grayish purple. I've never experienced the color fading as Marisol said. I've got a bar of the soap from the pic that's over a year old and it's still the same dark color. Guest guest
Delores, For which application are you talking about? Lotions, lip balms, etc., will eventually turn another color, tawny to orange. That's why it's better to use annato powder [sp?] if you want orange to begin with. I've never tried it in salt and sugar scrubs. I've never experiement to see if CP soap faded, since I usually don't let the sun hit any product if I'm doing a fair. It's just not good for the product, regardless of what it is or if the color will fade. The temps can get really hit in the jars and bottles and it will start to degrade the product. But I imagine that with nature colorings, with time, it will eventually fade slightly. Since every nature colorant I've used, there is some slight fading. I've have made soap with spinach powder, which is a bright green and once it cures it turns to a straw green color, very nice. I have seen M & P fade in the sun right in front of my eyes to the horror of another soapers. She was so upset, she cried. She had no canopy to shade her product. She had a lovely pink soap turn cream color. I hope this helps. Marisol in Brooklyn PS: Dee, are you going to be at the 7th Heaven Fair in Brooklyn this June? I'm thinking of participating, but I really haven't had much time to make soap. What a bummer. deecal@... wrote: In a message dated 5/23/2007 1:38:15 PM Eastern Daylight Time, luzimarrod@... writes: If you get purple in the beginning it will stay a nice purple. Guest guest
Colleen, It's good to know that it doesn't fade in CP. I meant in lotions, lip balms and other products it does fade. I've had lotions and lip balms turn orange after a few months. And after a year the lip balm turned a yucko color, like funcky pumpkin or something. Have you noticed if you place it in the sun, does it fade or has it stayed the same? The CP, I mean, which is what Delores was asking also. Was Shaye original question about CP or M & P, or lotions and potions? I've confused myself... LOL! I need to have dinner! Marisol in Brooklyn PS: Love your swirls. Are your soaps more square than retangular, or is my computer off a bit? Guest guest
Marisol, I do CP.... But what I am going to try... I have been making some primitive looking soaps for a woman, and so I am doing rebatching for these .. I am going to add some Alkanet infused in a little OO to part of the rebatch. I have it infusing now. Shaye Re: Re: Alkanet Root powder Colleen, It's good to know that it doesn't fade in CP. I meant in lotions, lip balms and other products it does fade. Guest guest
Hi all, Even if the sun doesn’t hit the product there are some colors that will disappear. I know because I’ve had it happen to me. All products are under the tent but the uv rays bounce around. The soaps most affected are M & P. Are your soaps more square than retangular, or is my computer off a bit? Thanks Marisol!!! The soaps in the pics are from my old cp loaf mold. They were pretty odd cut because I can't cut straight to save my life. I now use a 12 bar wood slab mold from Upland Soap Factory. It has a silicone liner with cut lines & is super easy to use. They're closed now because they're moving from CA to NC, yeah, closer & hopefully cheaper shipping!!! Here's the one I have: http://www.uplandsoapfactory.com/store/product.php?productid=3 & cat=1 & page=1 Colleen http://www.countrymeadowcreations.com

Delores - Try it again, only use a bit more of the powder. My first couple batches turned out grayish so I used more powder and they are now a light purple (not as dark as the layers in my previous pic). Guest guest
Delores, Depending on how much powder you steep in the oil is the color that you will achieve. A little makes a greyish purple color, more powder, darker color. I've never experienment with CP to see if the alkanet root powder actually fades, but other products have faded, my lotions have turned orange, lip balms have faded to yucky pink dirt color, etc. The nature colors tend to lose their colors faster. They all fade somewhat, some say they don't notice the difference. I'm going to try and see if this is true. I will make some CP with alkanet, cure the bar and then leave it in the sun. I'll get back to everyone with my find.
