Hello Ed,It sounds like you could benefit from reading the "juice" recipe on my http://www.VitamixLady.com website - it isn't a recipe as much as it is a "How To" on how to make silky-smooth (yet still cold) smoothies. For anyone who doesn't like their smoothies cold - you can ALWAYS blend longer until it is the temperature you like (it will go as high as 200° F).The avocado is the biggest culprit in making it thick BTW - Avocado really thickens smoothies.I blend for 2 minutes, and I'd use ice instead of water (see above about temperature - the ice becomes water, but buys you more blending time). If the apple was whole, it got caught under the blade and was spinning in circles the whole time with the blades - did you use your tamper? (but apples can sometimes get caught under the blades and evade the tamper).Have you visited the links section of our http://www..com website? There is a TON of helpful information there!Hope this is helpful!

Howdy all,

Recently bought a vitamix 5200...been trying to come up with good recipes and so far everything tastes pretty good.

One thing Ive noticed is that the smoothies are very thick. Which makes them hard to drink. They will pour out but its more like a slurpee than a drink. Am I not blending long enough? How long do you typically blend for?

A sample recipe might be some baby carrots..celery an apple, half an avocado and some frozn berries I add around a cup of water.

I blend for about 30 seconds or so. First time I made this the apple didnt even blend even tho i cut it in half it was at the bottom of the blender...whole.

Anyway, looking forward to some tips. I plan on using this thing at least once a day if not more so Id like to get good at it :)

Thanks in advance

Ed

I used frozen fruit (berries) and water....the drink was pretty cold so perhaps it could have stood a little longer blending. I was looking for some protein and healthy fat from the avocado. This may sound hilariousbut in germany ICE comes at a premium. Most freezers are vry tiny so ice cube trays are pretty much out of the question. Restaurants dont even serve ice in drinks. So for the most part I'll be using frozen fruits as my cold ingredient.I work out very hard every day so Im trying to develop a smoothie I can drink in the morning that will provide the energy and stamina for those workouts. From: Lea Ann Savage <lsavage@...> Sent: Monday, November 7, 2011 2:47 PMSubject: Re: Smoothie thickness

Then the alternative is what you are doing - frozen FRUITS + water instead of unfrozen fruits + ice. Frozen grapes are a lot like ice cubes - lots of water in them!Avocado is delicious, but makes smoothies very creamy and thick. Not always a bad thing and it is GREAT in ice creams!!!

I use frozen fruit & fruit juice rather than water. I was getting the frozen mixed fruit at COSTCO but then decided to get a variety of fresh fruits when they were on sale. I cut them up & froze them on cookie sheets lined with Saran Wrap before I bagged them up. Seems to be working out fine. The juice that I like to use in it is the Ocean Spray Blueberry Pomegranate flavor. YUM
